Canada's military preparedness has received significant attention lately. Following the release of the latest defence policy update in May, critics have drawn attention to prevailing issues in spending, procurement, enlistment and military culture. Successive governments over the past three decades have failed to reverse the Canadian Armed Forces' decline. In our recent article featured in Canadian Military History, Paul Esau and I have tried to situate these debates within a broader and much needed historical context. It examines how the CAF lapsed into its beleaguered state, the challenges it faces, and the evolving purpose of the Forces in supporting and reinforcing a western-led international order.
