Technologist , Entrepreneur and Educator | Predictive Analytics, AI and Machine Learning in Network and Security Operations
I was recently listening to a webinar by Shamus McGillicuddy on his network management trends report 2024. This chart about the difficulty of hiring qualified network engineers caught my eye. This chart shows that in two years things have changed. While there are some industry trends driving this - more security incidents, cloud adoption and retirements after the pandemic - the issue that I see regularly is companies are clueless about skills sets and experience level. Let me explain: I saw two requests last week that highlight this point. The first job said they wanted a network engineer with 3 years experience, knows how to deploy Palo Alto firewalls & Panorama in AWS using IaC automation, integrate it with SIEM and have Palo Alto (PCNSE) certification. The pay rate is for someone with 3 yrs experience, but someone with 3 yrs experience is not going to have these skills. The second was a post on reddit. He/She was lamenting that they were not able to find qualified senior engineers even though they were paying above market rate (they were not). The position was for someone who has experience deploying SD-WAN (Viptela/Catalyst) and has knowledge of wireless and cloud networking. I know most of the network engineers out there get these types of requests routinely. Recently, a CCIE with 20 yrs experience quipped that he won't qualify for most the jobs out there. Networks have become more complex and it is harder for one engineer to have all the skills. If companies want to get skilled people they need to build a pipeline of talent internally and narrow down the focus, so there is a deep level of expertise in different areas. Any thoughts ? #networkengineer #hiring
