How to Establish Motivated Lighting for Natural Looking Interviews ? Cameras capture a scene in a 2D space, so it becomes the job of excellent lighting to make the frame feel as 3-dimensional as possible. With a great lighting set-up, you start to add contrast, shape, texture, and compositional space to the scene. We can take this even further by having the light source appear as if it’s being projected by an element within the scene. This is called motivated lighting. Here are three key terms that a new cinematographer should be familiar with before working with a producer and/or director: Shot Composition: This refers to the arrangement and framing of elements within the frame of a shot. It involves decisions about where to place the subject(s), camera angle, camera distance (such as wide shot, medium shot, close-up), and overall visual layout. Understanding shot composition is crucial for conveying the intended mood, meaning, and storytelling aspects of a scene. Lighting Setup: Lighting plays a crucial role in cinematography as it sets the mood, highlights important elements, and creates depth within the frame. Cinematographers need to understand different lighting techniques such as key light, fill light, and backlight, as well as how to manipulate light sources to achieve desired effects. Familiarity with lighting equipment and setups will enable effective communication with the director and other crew members to achieve the desired visual aesthetic. Camera Movement: Camera movement refers to the motion of the camera during a shot. This can include techniques such as panning (horizontal movement), tilting (vertical movement), tracking (following a subject's movement), crane shots, dolly shots, and handheld camera work. Each type of camera movement conveys a different feeling or effect and can be used to enhance the storytelling or emotional impact of a scene. Understanding camera movement allows cinematographers to collaborate effectively with directors in visualizing and executing their creative vision. New Work... Video Title: Melancholic Remake I'm thrilled to share my latest project where I took on multiple roles to bring this vision to life. In this video, I showcase my skills in post-production, cinematography, direction, art direction, lighting, and various filming techniques. Roles and Responsibilities: Director: Conceptualized and directed the entire video, ensuring a cohesive and engaging narrative. Cinematographer: Managed camera work, capturing stunning visuals that convey the melancholic theme effectively using the Sony A7III Post-production: Skillfully edited the footage to create a seamless flow and maintain emotional impact. Art Director: Designed and arranged the visual elements to enhance the storytelling. Camera Handling: Operated the Sony A7III with precision to achieve dynamic and impactful shots. CG Supervisor on Set! Sometimes, we receive projects for post that were shot without the involvement of a CG supervisor on set. Why wasn’t one invited to the shoot? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are at least two reasons: budget savings or confidence in one's own abilities to shoot the project independently, relying on experience and knowledge. This can be the case, and sometimes producers, operators, or directors do have sufficient knowledge in the field of visual effects. However, unfortunately, this isn't always the case, and it genuinely pains me to see it. Attempting to save on a supervisor during the shoot can ultimately lead to a much larger budget during post-production, when VFX artists start grappling with shots, unsure of how to approach them. Consequently, the budget increases due to the complexity of the work arising from additional problems. And what about cleanups? Without adequate knowledge of how certain things are done technically, scenes might be shot in a way that cleaning up the footage could take a significant chunk of the budget, for work that no one will ever see. Alternatively, the operator might discard a good shot, thinking there will be problems removing an object, although in reality, that's not the case. If the project isn't graphically complex, producers might not invite a CG supervisor to the shoot, but at the very least, they could consult with one on various issues before filming. Advice costs nothing! My point is that it would be genuinely great if the budget is used appropriately, rather than on correcting unnecessary mistakes. Neither the creators nor the project benefits from this!
