Over the last few days, as I have mourned the tragic passing of actor, Matthew Perry, I have decided to repost this note that I wrote a few years ago to my team about just how inspired I was by his acting career --- 📺 What "Friends" Taught Me About Leadership 🛋 As a Communications and Media CEO, I've discovered valuable lessons in the most unexpected places. Recently, I found inspiration in the hilarious duo of Joey and Chandler. Here are three insights on recognizing support and incentivizing employee performance that I've gleaned from their unforgettable interactions: 1️⃣ Genuine Friendship: Joey and Chandler's unwavering support for each other, both in good times and bad, reminded me of the importance of fostering strong bonds within a team. Read enough of my posts and you notice baseball always seems to find its way in. Here I go again. This week the New York Yankees put their starting center fielder and fan favorite, Harrison Bader, on waivers. This means he was free to be claimed by any team in MLB, just pick him up. That's not the news. The news is this, per Bader, he found out while eating a snack watching ESPN in the Yankees clubhouse. No one bothered to tell him he was free to be had. Two points to make here. First, his professionalism. You can imagine the embarrassment of the situation, then add the fact that immediately after learning your team no longer wants you around, a reporter sticks a mic in your face. If ever there was a time for revenge, it's now. Nope. He wouldn't take the bait. No matter how many times he was asked how it made him feel, he kept repeating that he was blessed for having had the opportunity to be there in the first place. Take note. Sometimes things end badly, it happens. When it does, always take the high road. NEVER bad mouth your former org or manager, no matter how bad they hurt you. YOU win every time you pass at the chance. Second, think of your own org. I don't care how big a company you work for, you're not bigger than the NY Yankees. One of the most iconic org's in the world. You'd think they would have nothing but the best people and practices in place, yet somehow, they cut a guy, and no one bothered to tell him. It's a horrible look. Players are already talking about it. Think this helps culture? Same for your organization. Your people are always watching. They pay more attention to the moves you make than the plaque in the lobby with your values on it. Want to build "culture"???? This is where you find it! That’s a question that you better be able to answer. Get clear on exactly what you do within your organization and how it positively impacts people around you and your customers. I spent my time in three major areas at Disney and the first major area I spent my time in was hiring the right people. There is nothing more important than having the right people in your business. Always remember, your people are your brand. My impression of UPS, FedEx, etc. is the person that delivers the package at the door, not their leadership team. 41 years ago yesterday - March 25th, 1983 - The Outsiders was released in theaters. March 25th, 1983, S.E. Hinton's fantastic 1967 novel was brought to life by Francis Ford Coppola and an amazing cast including Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon and Emilio Estevez. Throughout the movie, Ponyboy, a Greaser (a gang from the "wrong side of the tracks"), and Cherry Valance, the girlfriend of a Soc (the gang from the "right side of the tracks"), clearly have a connection. Because she dated a Soc and because of their class differences (in the 1950s), it’s difficult for them to have more than a cursory relationship throughout most of the story, but she realizes Ponyboy is different and at one point says to him: “You read a lot don’t you, Ponyboy. I can just tell. I bet you watch sunsets, too.” When he reflects on this short but poignant conversation, Ponyboy says to himself: “It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren’t so different. We saw the same sunset.” And herein lies our lesson for leaders. As you advance in your career, you will begin leading teams that are larger in size, and they will be compromised of a wonderfully diverse set of people from all walks of life. These teams that you lead could include other executives, middle management, entry-level positions and interns. Your leadership style will even be felt by the people you don’t always see that work behind the scenes. Great leaders recognize that regardless of our station in life, compensation package or title will go home and “See the same sunset.” Remember, as you advance in your career or grow your business to treat everyone with respect and appreciation regardless of where they may view the sunset. That’s what great leaders do, and we need more of them.
