Wanting to understand how you can incorporate resilience across the infrastructure lifecycle, using a structured approach to achieve a step change? Then join Bachar Hakim, PhD FICE FCIHT CEng and Federico Perrotta at the #NCE #RoadsConference 👇👇👇
I am thrilled to share that next week I'll be presenting at the New Civil Engineer Roads conference in London! Join me and my colleague Federico Perrotta as we discuss how we can incorporate resilience across the infrastructure lifecycle, using a structured approach to achieve a step change in the way we do things. If you are planning to attend, please let me know and let’s meet up – see you there: https://lnkd.in/gpETKuXh #AECOM #Roads #Transportation #AssetManagement #NewCivilEngineer #NCERoads2024

Civil Designer / Structural drafter / Irricad designer / Digger, Scraper, Dump truck, Roller Operator (supports work life balance)
Lee's attitude towards developing a program targeted at the end user and not worrying about what the others are doing, is really the foundation of his success, plus the fact his a genius helps! it's why Australians have created so many internationally used things ie WiFi. We talk as though something has changed with the rise of BIM. Those of us who have been around long enough know we started leveraging 3D models 20 years ago, more so because of Lee's vision. However BIM is nothing new. I believe BIM is designed to be a communication tool, but it hasn't reached that goal yet. This is where my opinion differs to Lee's. You take away drawings and suddenly no one knows how to communicate. The gap between engineer and designer grows further apart and more mistakes occur, which we all know are happening more and more these days. There's an entire workforce from trades to engineer's that will need to use technology they don't fully understand. So from the shear size of that upskilling and the lack of R&D corporates provide, I can't see this happening in my lifetime. Australia is one of the lowest investors in R&D: https://lnkd.in/gMTEd6Pc If we look at what's happening now in the naval architecture space it's a perfect example of the danger's we face with AI & BIM. Boat designers have sprung up everywhere because of access to powerful software which can geometrically design a boat in hours, perform many calculations and can export to CNC. So if it looks like a boat, it is a boat! Technical people know this isn't the case. Consultants need to perform appropriate checks and balances. Their obligation comes from their accreditations to standards, which sometimes dictate process and describe who is qualified persons performing these roles. A problem with many designer's is they don't understand engineering processes, because they don't perform first principles and lack foresight on critical QA elements to present. That's why historically we produce detail drawings, to level our understanding of what are critical elements. It's so we can communicate to one another in detail. How many times have you asked where's this detail? "it's all in the model". If you think like that you may as well go back to drawing with crayons. A model only serves as a truth if drawings are produced directly from it. This is not BIM. I was doing this 20 years ago. BIM for me is more around asset management and digital twins and operational advancements, it's not really about advancing construction and engineering. I see thing's like Apple Vision Pro as the biggest leap forward in construction & eng, being able to have your drawings onsite next to your work and not have them blow away or details missed cause there in the site office. This is the biggest advance, not BIM.

We are on #JKL live for the Engineers Presidential Debate We are going to bring unity of purpose and for engineers. The voice of engineers will be heard in this country. Construction companies shouldn't run without engineers. We have to set standards for engineers We have to have laws to regulate the practice. Buildings have to have a certificate of occupation Developers who do not engage engineers should be held responsible. Structural integrity must be upheld. #EngineeringWeLead #iekelections2024

Many people aren't aware of how roads are designed, funded, or function. Road infrastructure is crucial in our society, connecting communities and enabling easy travel. In today’s episode, we dive into this topic to reveal insights about modern civil engineering and how we got here. We dive into the evolution of road construction materials and the shared nature of public infrastructure. Scott highlights the challenges of road maintenance and the need for more engineers in the field of infrastructure. Listen: https://lnkd.in/eH3xwmCJ #civilengineering #roadengineering #infrastructure

Bridges play a vital role in connecting communities and keeping our infrastructure running smoothly, but many are aging and at risk. With 2.7% of U.S. bridges classified as fracture critical, it's more important than ever to inspect and preserve them. In this Civil + Structural Engineer Media article, Shane Boone, PhD, Chair of the ASNT Research Council Infrastructure Committee, explores the importance of deck inspections and why assessing both serviceability and structural integrity is key to preventing failures.
