Don't let anyone tell you that transit planning is just about buses and trains. Creating truly transit oriented communities means adapting the urban environment to support and reinforce transit use: through urban form, land use, public space and connected transportation networks. It's the latter point that my colleague Ashley Thompson, AICP and I explored in this post on mobility hubs. Emphasizing transit as the backbone of multi-modal networks requires that we make it safe and convenient to get to and from stops and stations, as well as other destinations that people want to connect to on their journeys. Our third and final article in the Future of Cities series. The pandemic has transformed mobility and transportation in cities globally. Imagine a world where public transit is so efficient, the thought of taking your own vehicle seems impractical. 🚀This might sound like utopia, but it's closer to reality than you might think. How is this possible, you ask? * Transit agencies are now leveraging cutting-edge intelligent technology. Turning the vital role they have in our daily lives, and modern urban functioning, into an art form backed by science- optimizing public transport at its core. As I see it, this dynamic transformation holds immense potential for the urban era: 1️⃣Economic: Enhanced public transit could result in large savings for individuals and stimulate the economy as the amount saved can be allocated elsewhere. 2️⃣Socio-Cultural: Ideally, better public transport systems may shift social attitudes, making public transit usage a norm rather than a choice of necessity. 3️⃣Environmental: Increased usage of public transit can significantly impact our carbon footprint, advocating for a kinder, greener world. Much like any major upgrade, optimization of public transportation using intelligent technology will have its fair share of hurdles. However, overcoming them is essential, given the multifaceted benefits. My prediction: The transformative shift in public transit facilitated by intelligent tech will, indisputably, change the face of urban living and contribute tremendously to the world's Sustainable Development Goals. Remember, the most significant changes often come from staid parts of our life that we might overlook daily.
