Great video! An important takeaway is something Sal said about merchant training. "While merchant crews are trained in firefighting they don't get a lot of experience and a lot of hands on training..." The Coast Guard only requires shipboard firefighting every five years and requires no damage control training. Shipboard fires are becoming more prevalent as 2022 saw the highest reporting of shipboard fires in a decade. Companies and crews should be training frequently and with variety, not simply running engine room fire drills with no variable. Fires are not static events that behave in the exact way you trained, it's the exact opposite. Great training done infrequently is still bad training. #shipboardfire #maritime MITAGS

Next week is Safety Stand Down, the theme is Back to Basics. We can begin with Seatbelt use. All firefighters are responsible to use their seatbelt. Drivers are responsible for seatbelt use. Officers are responsible for seatbelts. Battalion Chiefs are responsible for seatbelts. Fire Chiefs are responsible for seatbelts. If we can’t get seatbelts correct, how can we get the more complicated basics correct? Firefighter injury and death is not part of the job.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Memphis District recognizes National Safety Month every June. National Safety Month has been observed since 1996 and focuses on preventing mishaps that result in injuries, illnesses, and fatalities negatively impacting our lives and mission readiness. While we all know safety is important year-round, this month is an opportunity to call extra attention to the safety of our environment at work, home, and in our communities. Safety matters no matter where we are, year-around. Everyone should take an active part in helping to keep our environments safe by actively participating in things like preparing for emergencies, mitigating falls, preventing heat-related illness, and recognizing and mitigating hazards of all type wherever they exist. Let’s all dedicate ourselves to being active safety role models on and off the job because safety matters and it may prevent an injury or save a life. This means taking the time to recognize hazards and taking the steps to protect ourselves, fellow workers, family, and friends. It means developing a habit of thinking about safety on the way to work, during work, on the way home, at home, and even while on vacation. Considering the human brain is one of the fastest information processors, we have the tool necessary to think about, recognize, and mitigate possible mishaps. We’re really talking about a few seconds of thought time to possibly prevent an injury, illness, or save a life—think about it. #memphisdistrictwinning

I make the case often that I had to learn a new job and perform well instantaneously every 9-12 months in the Navy and share that it’s a pretty universal service experience. 👏 In an interview, it’s going to be a lot more effective to use a story than to just say “I’m a quick learner.” 👏 Like, I might #SetTheScene with, “I flew onto my ship when the squadron was deployed, slept off the jet lag, was assigned as the ground safety officer, and had two chiefs introduce themselves for the first time and say it was time to evaluate the respiratory protection program, all in under three days. Look, I couldn’t consistently find where to eat without a guide and hadn’t filled out my notebook chart of name/title/callsign for the officers yet, much less had a chance to realize I was in charge of OSHA protective equipment. [#problemsolving] I asked them if it was possible to reschedule back two weeks, started taking notes on all the references I could find in my non-flying hours, asked the previous ground safety officer for help, and checked with friends in other squadrons. We got it done, through [#values] collaboration, using my references and resources, and a healthy dose of humility. And then [#lessonlearned] I made sure that role was explicitly included in the turnover binder and those files were easily accessible for the person who took the job over 8 months later.” #Veterans, we all have a story of pulling something off that we had no business getting done, by using our skills and resources to navigate an impossible situation. The 5 Principles of Patrol Planning Reconnaissance Security Control Common Sense Per the Ranger handbook, these are the 5 principles of patrol. I memorized these well before Ranger School thanks to a newly tabbed SGT that didn't like seeing a PFC sitting around at the end of the day, even though I had just finished sweeping and mopping the entire maintenance bay by myself, and quickly quizzed me on my 5 Principles of Patrol. Needless to say I did not know them at the time, and subsequently did a lot of pushups as a result. Fast forward a few years, and these Principles are being taught to me in Ranger School. During the last phase, our Ranger Instructor stressed to us, that if you somehow forget the first 4 principles, as long as your decisions and actions make sense, you'd be capable of passing your graded patrol. Why is that the most important of the 5? It can help you solve the other 4 principles when all else fails.
