In the industry where I worked on a project, the processes were managed by a SCADA system, an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. Ordinary computers are merely elements of this intricate system, which comprises several vital components such as Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), supervisory systems, and data acquisition systems. Establishing and maintaining a SCADA system necessitates more than system administrators; it requires specialists with expertise in diverse fields to guarantee the seamless integration and functioning of all components. In my project, there was a fully set up and operational system. My task involved creating a clone of a computer system to function as a supervisory system. This was achieved effortlessly through disk cloning, booting the clone on a new system, and verifying its proper operation. Upon inspecting the installed components, I discovered that the reporting software failed to generate reports upon request. The plant engineer informed me that this issue had always existed, and they had resorted to manually noting the readings from the HMI interface. I chose to tackle this problem, and it turned out to be a configuration issue with the SQL server. Troubleshooting took several hours, but ultimately, my efforts were rewarded. I managed to please a client so much that they continue to give me projects. While I don't believe that exceeding the assigned task is always necessary for progress, as it involves balancing priorities and venturing beyond one's comfort zone, it is undeniably rewarding. It offers numerous advantages, including skill enhancement, proactive problem-solving, and augmented value. The code can be developed in-house but most frequently it is developed by external engineering companies ( #thirdparty #subcontractors). The #sourcecode of control logic are stored on the #EngineeringWorkstation and/or on data servers or data shares. The #IEC61131-3:2013 [46] outlines five #PLC #programminglanguages. These are split into two categories: (1) Graphical (Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, and Sequential Function Chart) (2) Text Based (Instruction List, Structured Text). Although these languages are #vendor and application agnostic, vendor specific language subsets are common as well. An example of a #ladderdiagram with a function block for a #Siemens PLC is shown in Figure. The control logic is compiled with vendor-proprietary compilers and uploaded to a PLC for execution in the form of #bytecode or #binarycode. #TrustEverybodyButCutTheCards
