"Our Nation's greatest asset is it's people. Leaders cannot control the environment in which personnel operate, but they do control how they invest in their people" This quote displays at the start of every O2X Human Performance training and education workshop. Tactical athletes are expected to operate at high levels at all times. They accept inherent risks to their health and welfare in order to serve. When the bell sounds, the call goes out, or the command says go - they go, and they go 100%. Nobody understands the daily needs of tactical athletes like those who have walked before them. Driving 1% improvements to improve their performance on the job, and their lives at home is the driving mission behind what O2X does. Although the military may be the worst offender, any business that becomes large enough can fall victim to this same scenario. It emphasizes the need for leaders and managers at all levels to ensure they’re creating a corporate culture that encourages critical thinking and common sense while adhering to the principle of the published policies. “Knowing the standard, knowing it is unachievable, yet still “finding a way” normalizes the idea that standards are malleable and can be circumvented when necessary to accomplish the mission.” “…the best solution would be to reduce the number of requirements on service members, removing as many irrelevant or unnecessary ones as possible. Provide broad guidance, incentivize adherence to its spirit, and build a culture that normalizes adherence to discipline, accountability, and the inherent desire to do the right thing.”

Received this great note from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Action Corps today in my email! Make sure to reach out to your representative to get HR 1139 - GUARD VA Benefits Act passed! Claim Shark companies have made statements that they aren’t breaking the law because they don’t charge fees for “preparing” veterans' claims. Claim Sharks state that they “assist” or “consult” for veterans' claims, and this how they rationalize why they should be allowed to charge thousands of dollars for their services. This is still illegal. Using creative semantics to skirt the law is not innovative, and it is not honest or transparent. There are no “good actors” or “bad actors”. Every company that charges for initial claims assistance is doing it illegally. Claim Sharks say veterans should have the “choice” to be fleeced out of thousands of dollars. No matter how much money these companies spend on Capitol Hill, the VFW will not allow them to dismantle consumer protections and normalize harming veterans.

The Pentagon's refusal to disclose whether it is meeting its own deployment-to-dwell ratio goals is emblematic of a broader issue that plagues the military establishment: the opacity surrounding policies that have direct implications on the well-being and readiness of service members. The 2021 policy, which aims for active duty units to spend three months at home for every month deployed, underscores an essential balance intended to safeguard the mental and physical health of our troops. However, the veil of classification over waiver requests and approvals not only undermines transparency but also signals a potential misalignment between stated objectives and operational realities. This concealment becomes particularly concerning in light of findings that members of Army armor brigades, who have consistently fallen short of dwell time goals, exhibit a heightened risk of suicide. Such statistics are not mere numbers; they represent lives at risk, families in distress, and a readiness challenge that cannot be overlooked. When operational tempo overrides the well-being of our service members, we must question the sustainability and ethical underpinnings of our military engagements. The Pentagon's tight-lipped stance on the issue does a disservice to the very individuals it purports to serve. It perpetuates a culture where the pursuit of operational objectives obscures the need for accountability and care towards those who bear the brunt of these policies. The operational tempo's impact on service members extends beyond the immediate stressors of deployment; it infiltrates every aspect of their lives, from mental health challenges to strains on family life, as poignantly illustrated by the frustrations voiced by the families of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team. The implications of failing to adhere to deployment-to-dwell ratios are profound, not just for the individuals directly affected but for the military's operational effectiveness and moral standing. The readiness of our forces is inextricably linked to their well-being. Yet, as retired Gen. Robert “Abe” Abrams pointed out, the crushing tempo at current resourcing levels is unsustainable, echoing a sentiment felt across various branches of the military. The path forward must involve a recalibration of priorities, where the health and readiness of service members are not compromised by the voracious demands of operational commitments. This requires a shift towards greater transparency, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of our troops. Military leaders and policymakers must bridge the gap between rhetoric and reality, ensuring that policies designed to protect our service members are more than aspirational benchmarks. Only then can we begin to address the profound challenges that beset our military and honor the sacrifices of those who serve.
Pentagon won’t say if troop deployment tempo exceeds recommended goal
