Black artists who are often overlooked…   Are you aware of Black artists from the 20th and 21st centuries who are known to art institutions, but are who are not as widely known or celebrated as some of their historical or contemporary peers and are often excluded from mainstream conversations? "For example, Alma Thomas, Jack Whitten, Sam Gilliam, and Frank Bowling are well-deserved citations of the early Black abstractionists, but lesser known to that history, broadly speaking, are Lilian Thomas Burwell, Evangeline “EJ” Montgomery, and Deborah Dancey. While contemporary artists like Kerry James Marshall, Betye Saar, and Faith Ringgold are the founding leaders of contemporary figurative painting and printmaking, the contributions of artists like Malcolm Bailey, Charles Alston, and Camille Billops may not be as widely known or discussed." February is Black History Month! Join the celebration! Let's explore some artistic ways you can celebrate the month in the office:             1) Costume Contest - You can encourage your co-workers to unleash their artistic side by dressing up in traditional African outfits. You can even take it one step further by suggesting that they dress up like prominent historical black figures, such as St. William Grant, Nelson Mandela, Muhummad Ali, or Rosa Parks, or fictional persons of African descent, such as Princess Tiana, Black Panther, and Mace Windu. Whether factual or fictional, representation matters! 2) Invite Speakers - Knowledge is power. You can take Black History Month as an opportunity to engage experts to hold presentations on black history, giving employees of African descent the chance to enhance their appreciation for the legacy of their ancestors while also allowing others from other backgrounds to become more informed as well. 3) Create Black History-Themed Social Media Posts - An innovative and informative way to highlight your workplace's respect for this monthly observance is to create social media calendars relevant to it, which could range from profiles on important black historical figures to reels with employees finishing songs by black artistes to features on significant events in black culture. #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #workculture #jisworkculturewednesdays

Black art encompasses a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, music, dance, literature, and more. It often reflects the Black experience and is a powerful tool for social commentary and political activism. Black artists have used their work to challenge stereotypes, confront racism, and celebrate Black culture and heritage. Despite its significance, Black art has often been undervalued and underrepresented in mainstream art institutions. Black artists have faced systemic barriers to entry and have been excluded from opportunities and recognition. However, the rise of Black art movements and the increasing demand for diverse perspectives in the art world have paved the way for greater visibility and appreciation of Black art. Today, Black art continues to thrive and inspire. It serves as a means of storytelling, of preserving history, and of imagining new possibilities. It is a testament to the resilience and creativity of Black people and a reminder of the importance of supporting and strengthening marginalized voices in the arts.
