The Advancing Dual-Use Innovation event last week, presented by COVE, truly highlighted the transformative power of dual-use technologies in fostering innovation, economic growth, and national security. The discussions from both panels were thought-provoking and insightful, with expert leaders shedding light on the challenges, opportunities, and success stories within the dual-use space. Events like this showcase how collaboration and innovation can drive meaningful progress in Canada, NATO, and beyond. Dual-use technologies refer to innovations, products, or technologies that have applications in both civilian and military contexts. These technologies are often developed for commercial purposes but can also be adapted for defence or security applications, or vice versa. Dual-use technologies represent the intersection of innovation, economic growth, and national security, making them a vital focus for industries and governments worldwide. On January 16th, COVE hosted the Advancing Dual-Use Innovation with NATO DIANA event where nearly 400 business and policy leaders from across North America gathered to explore the impact of dual-use innovation in Canada and within NATO. Two panels were hosted at the event. The first panel explored the latest trends shaping the defence innovation landscape and offered expert perspectives on emerging opportunities and challenges. Panelists included: 🔹 MGen Paul Peyton, Military Deputy Director, North America – NATO DIANA 🔹 Bernard Mills, CEO – STELIA Aerospace North America 🔹 Enrique Oti, Chief Strategy Officer – Second Front Systems 🔹 Dr. David Perry, CEO – Canadian Global Affairs Institute The second panel focused on the journey of dual-use innovators, providing actionable insights into overcoming challenges and achieving success in this specialized field. The panel featured: 🔹 Glenn Cowan, Founder and Managing Partner – ONE9 🔹 Tara Wickwire, Principal – The Message Brand Communications 🔹 Emily Smits, CEO and Co-founder – Modest Tree This event not only solidified COVE’s partnership as an accelerator site for NATO DIANA but also amplified our influence as a catalyst for technological advancement and economic development in dual-use sectors, aligning with NATO’s mission to strengthen security and innovation collaboration across the alliance. 💡 Looking to learn more about dual-use innovation and NATO DIANA? One of the most rewarding aspects of working in economic development is seeing an initiative you’ve sweated and worried over flourish well beyond what you thought possible. For me, that initiative is the RAMP - Regional Accelerator and Mentoring Program. When a collective of government, technology and business leaders first met around a table in 2017 to discuss standing up a technology accelerator in Roanoke, we confronted one of the most onerous questions entrepreneurs ask themselves on a daily basis – “How do we do this?” The answer came via collaboration. The City of Roanoke, VA bought a building and scored a grant to furnish it with FF&E. Carilion Clinic made it available to us. Our EDA provided a grant. Virginia Western Community College signed on to manage the facility while Roanoke - Blacksburg Technology Council stepped up to manage the actual accelerator. Countless volunteers from the business, education and technology sectors devoted their time, energy and financial resources into making our collective vision a reality. If this seems like a long paragraph, it’s because so many organizations and people - too many to name here - contributed when it was most needed. Once we figured out how to do it, we asked ourselves was “Will it work?” Fast forward to 2024. RAMP has graduated 52 companies that have supported 800 jobs and raised over $28 million in investment. Alumni run the gamut from biotechnology to autonomous flight to software built to ease the purchase of tickets to high school sporting events. The accelerator now offers spring and fall cohorts. RBTC and RAMP are now part of the Verge (formerly Valleys Innovation Council) Alliance, a strategic coalition of organizations that lead and drive public and private collaboration on innovation projects in our region and beyond. Under the strong leadership of Erin Burcham (VERGE), Taylor Ricotta Spellman (RBTC) and John Hagy (RAMP), we no longer ask ourselves how it will be done or whether it work. Instead, we’re lucky enough to ask “What’s next?”
A collaborative team of RAMP alumni have been selected as a finalist for the ACT NATO Innovation Challenge. Read the full story here 👉 https://bit.ly/3KHzoRe

🗣 “Why should I ever care about NATO? It’s an old men’s club, and they don't even post on TikTok…” 👇 💡Well, there was never a better time to care and engage, as the NATO Youth Summit 2024 has successfully proven! It was an absolute honor to be selected to attend NATO's flagship event in sunny Stockholm, representing King's College London and the Department of War Studies. I had the opportunity to: 🤝 Connect with inspiring young leaders and learn their ideas on the future of NATO 🎤 Learn from amazing speakers on stage 🎉 Celebrate NATO’s 75th anniversary 🇸🇪 Learn more about NATO’s newest member (finally): Sweden 📢 Talk about my favorite topics: Strategic Communication and combatting Disinformation What to take home after this day of inspiration, powerful appeals, and great conversations (apart from a rediscovered love for Kanelbullar)? 1️⃣ The "new" Generation Z is knowledgeable, capable, and more than keen to make transatlantic security future-proof! Decisionmakers urgently need to know their voices and get them on board! 2️⃣ Ever complex challenges need to be met with limited resources. We need to get creative and resourceful when addressing issues like disinformation in gaming communities, propaganda campaigns on social media, and the unprecedented implications of AI. 3️⃣ The age of European naivety is over. We must be prepared to defend the European project and our shared values as war is back in Europe (Rob Bauer, Admiral RNLN, and Yana Rudenko gave a powerful reminder of that). Thank you to the organizers of this amazing event NATO, The Aspen Institute, Försvarshögskolan - Swedish Defence University, and MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) - it was a blast! Also a huge thanks to Carlo M Borghini, Kristine Beitland, Robin El Kady, Ioana Andrada, and many more for the inspiring conversations! ❓If you were in NATO's shoes, what would be your strategy to engage with young people? #NATOYouthSummit #WeAreNATO #NATO
