The mission of the Oxford Forum for International Development is to foster dialogue, collaboration, and innovation in the field of international development to achieve a positive impact. Oxford Forum for International Development: OxFID is one of the largest student-led development conferences in Europe, drawing in attendees from the UK, as well as internationally, every single year. Since 2008, OxFID has been facilitating conversation and collaboration between actors in international development, inspiring attendees to engage with global issues, and providing opportunities for networking and dialogue across a range of sectors and disciplines. We find ourselves in a period of re-evaluating how, as an international community, progress can be a sustainable and achievable goal for all, not a few. Bringing a host of impressive speakers and stimulating panels, we wish to develop a forum: an inclusive space where attendees and speakers alike may share ideas and begin the process of making change. OxFID 2024: Exploring the Conflict-Development Nexus: The central themes for OxFID 2024 address the critical intersection of violence and conflict within the realm of international development. We will discuss contemporary manifestations of violence and mechanisms of conflict. This will be paired with perspectives on the aftermath of conflict, post-conflict scenarios, the roles of policy, diplomacy and humanitarian work to understand the intricacies of rebuilding communities and fostering resilience. Addressing violence and conflict within the context of international development is imperative for creating sustainable and equitable societies. OxFID 2024 provides a unique opportunity to engage with these critical issues, offering actionable insights that contribute to positive global change. #OxFID #peacebuilding #internationaldevelopment

A brief glimpse of one of my interventions during the panel debate at the 9th Cohesion Forum in 📍 Brussels. 🌍 Looking to the future, we need to address three key challenges for the Cohesion Policy to achieve balanced growth: 1. Investing effectively in underdeveloped regions with poor socio-economic conditions and limited access to basic services and resources. 2. Closing the gap in economic, technological and physical connectivity between Europe's prosperous and slow-growth regions is crucial, as resources tend to be concentrated in more prosperous areas. 3. In Central and Eastern Europe, overcoming barriers to innovation and the diffusion of opportunities - characterised by gaps in infrastructure, public services and governance - is essential. 🌐 #EconomicDevelopment #EUregions #Innovation #CohesionPolicy

As the newly elected European Parliament and the European Commission under the renewed presidency of Ursula von der Leyen are set to begin their work, Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Chair of the Management Board of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and I have jointly published an article in POLITICO yesterday on why the EU needs to stay engaged in fragile contexts. In an interconnected, increasingly complex and fragile world, crisis, conflicts and wars quickly spill over. National or even continental borders become irrelevant. National solutions are no longer the answer to international challenges. The European Union has a special responsibility for its neighbouring continents and should play a leading role in international cooperation. Peace, poverty, stability and resilience are interconnected and should be dealt with in a comprehensive way. International cooperation benefits both European citizens and all countries in need. In this interconnected and increasingly fragile world we cannot exclude countries and regions outside Europe. We will be affected by a further increase in global social, economic and ecological crises and protracted violent conflicts. Neglecting that kind of assistance in fragile contexts is most likely to result in missed opportunities to reap the benefits of greater stability and peace. Just released: the 4th #AswanForum Conclusions & the “#AfricanYouth Declaration on Re-envisioning Global Governance for Peace and Development.” The Aswan Conclusions include a wide number of policy recommendations to feed into the preparations for the #SummitOfTheFuture. The “African Youth Declaration on Re-envisioning Global Governance for #Peace & #Development: The Future We Want” provides policymakers with policy-guiding actions for the meaningful inclusion & engagement of youth. Here are some key highlights from the Aswan Conclusions: ● Transform multilateralism, global governance frameworks, including International Financial Institutions to be more just, representative and equitable by amplifying African voices, and linking the reform of the global financial architecture with the reform of the peacebuilding architecture. ● Re-energize the Global Prevention and Sustaining Peace Agenda by, inter alia, strengthening the focus on conflict prevention in the work of the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council, as well as further empowering the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC). ● Advance holistic and integrated approaches to promote the Peace, Security and Development (PSD) Nexus through nationally and locally-owned operationalization of the triple nexus. ● Strengthen peace operations in Africa, and their contribution to advancing political solutions, including through clear, prioritized, sequenced, and achievable mandates, with clear exit strategies and transitions, nationally owned and regionally/internationally supported; and enhance support to AU Peace Support Operations (PSOs), including through UNSCR 2719. ● Advance the Common African Positions on Climate Change, Peace and Security by aligning climate and peacebuilding responses in Africa with the needs and priorities of African governments to advance climate resilience. ● Integrate women’s perspectives and leverage their leadership in support of inclusive and responsive multilateral institutions, and re-invigorate the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda as an agenda for conflict prevention and sustaining peace. ● Harness youth’s role in scaling up innovative solutions to build peace through education, including by enhancing the capacities and skills of youth in relevant peace and security areas. ● Revitalize partnerships for sustainable peace and development by scaling up recalibrated bilateral, regional, multilateral, and public-private partnerships, and advancing win-win partnership models between Africa and its partners. We extend our gratitude to partners, speakers and participants for their contributions to the Forum's success & look forward to working with you in advancing the Aswan Conclusions across policy forums.
