Visibility is a term you hear a lot in freight. Every conference I attend, someone on a panel inevitably talks about visibility being paramount and tablestakes. But who can actually define it? This was a question I was asked recently on The New Warehouse with Kevin Lawton, CLTD and Rob Bussey. To me, visibility is all about integration and connectivity in this space so that your systems can talk seamlessly to one another without human intervention. It’s more than just seeing where a shipment is on a map. The freight industry so fragmented. There are hundreds of thousands of actors from shippers to brokers to carriers. To get "visibility," here's what we recommend: 👉 Start by growing your network of integrations: Improving visibility in our industry starts with growing your integrations and connectivity. 👉 Use integrations to create efficient workflows: Integrations between solution providers allow for more efficient workflows, higher tracking success, and greater visibility of freight for brokers, ultimately benefiting all parties in the supply chain What does “visibility” mean to you?

Visibility is just a pipe dream until we have standardization. We can improve it, but it will never be fully realized without some fundamental changes in the industry. Think universal (electronic) BOL and POD. Think loading/unloading time stamps. ELD location tracking and rest period notices. Visibility of commodity by truck. All of that needs to be on a fairly standardized open source platform. Can you imagine if every time you got an email, you had to open it with the same program the sender used? That is the freight visibility reality right now. We'll never get rid of all the manual, heads down work until as an industry we quit trying to have our own in-house "secret sauce" for software. Just my opinion, of course.
