Did you know April is #InternshipAwarenessMonth? So often, we think of internships exclusively as a pillar of the college experience; a practical application of knowledge accumulated over four years just before a student is thrust out into the real world. But while college #internships are valuable, of course, this shouldn't be the only stage of education at which they happen. In fact, according to ASA research, 79% of high school students say they’re interested in these opportunities, but only 34% said they knew how to find them — and only 2% have actually completed one. Allowing young people the chance to test and try in #highschool through internships and other #workbasedlearning experiences is crucial to helping them discvoer what they like and don't like, which then allows them to make the most informed decision possible about their path after graduation. One shining example of success is Izzy Fitzgerald, a former Big Picture Learning student whose high school internship led to a dream job at San Diego City Hall. Read Izzy's story below.

A glimpse at the impact of work-based learning opportunities for young people: "Students who complete a paid internship during their undergraduate education earn $3,000 more than their non-internship peers one year after graduation. Two decades into their careers, graduates who participated in work-based learning, such as internships or apprenticeships, are far more likely to be satisfied with their careers, report higher annual income, and believe the investment they made in their education was worth it." https://lnkd.in/eCAKPtig

I’m so happy that this program exists and many congrats to the recipients. Providing funding for grad students who have found non-paid internships is a great first step to facing the reality of the lack of tenure-track (TT) positions and simply preferring an industry career. However, I’ll always take it one step further. Humanities/social sciences grad students receive among, if not, the lowest PhD stipends at Carolina. Since I’m not in the academic job market, I’m unfamiliar with the available number of TT social science professorships but my hypothesis is they are also low. My question is, how is the UNC Graduate School preparing humanities/social science grad students to find PAID internships? As a Carolina grad student, I took it upon myself to find my internship and create my own path. How can University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill continue to do more and do better for its grad students to truly grow with North Carolina and the South?
This summer, #UNC launched Bridge Beyond Carolina, a new initiative providing funding for students to pursue nonfaculty career by completing an internship outside the University that would otherwise be unpaid. According to Dean Dr. Beth Mayer-Davis, the program is a product of the Graduate School's strategic goal of “growing with North Carolina” and aligns with the school’s mission to produce highly qualified graduates who are ready to make an impact on North Carolina's workforce Discover how the program expands professional opportunities for graduate students https://unc.live/3LpeOWb
