Immigration Key for Leisure & Hospitality Sector Growth Despite an uptick in the U.S. unemployment rate recently, over 1 million jobs remain open this year in the leisure and hospitality travel sector. In an industry sector that currently employs over 17 million people, up 300,000 from 2023, the appetite for growth remains strong and is now settling down to a reasonable pre-COVID growth pace. We need to do more to support lawful immigration for permanent jobs and to fill seasonal jobs, with such programs as the H-2B guest worker program that allows hiring of foreign workers for temporary jobs. We are a country founded by immigrants, a strong and vibrant land of opportunity dependent upon a continuing flow of people with talent, work ethic and ambition.

A recent survey conducted by American Marketing Group (AMG) highlights a significant challenge faced by travel agencies: the difficulty in hiring qualified travel advisors despite a high demand for their services. Member agencies of AMG’s Travelsavers and Nest networks report a diversity of open positions but a lack of suitable candidates. The report identifies two main factors exacerbating the hiring problem: a wave of advisors leaving the profession and the influx of unqualified candidates due to misconceptions about the job. With the travel advisor market projected to grow by 11% over the next decade, there is an urgent need for a robust recruitment strategy. This strategy should include public education on the career, industry-led recruitment efforts, and travel advisors advocating for the profession within their own networks to dispel myths and highlight the job's realities. Check out some key findings of the study: -19% of travel advisor respondents note that many consumers are unaware that the travel advisor profession still exists. -69% of agencies plan to hire new advisors -But only 7% find it easy to identify qualified applicants -Two-thirds of the agencies looking to hire are seeking to fill more than one position, while about one-third aim to bring on as many qualified candidates as they can find -Two-thirds of advisors today are over 50 years old, with retirement nearing, and only 6% of advisors are under 35 -Nearly 50% of advisors say applicants don't have the right combination of skills and abilities, 44% report that applicants only want to travel for free, and 41% state that pay isn't high enough -Recruitment strategies used by AMG’s agencies include referrals (64%), networking (35%), job listings (28%) and social media posts (24%).
