I hate to burst anybody's beer bubbles but..... Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. That's September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the victory of the amateur Mexican Army over the much larger, better-equipped and better-trained French Army on 5 May 1862 in the Battle of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City. A year after this battle, though, the French defeated the Mexicans and installed Emperor Maximilian to rule Mexico. Three years later, in 1867, the Mexicans recaptured Mexico City, kicked out the French, executed Maximilian, and took their country back. It's sort of like the Mexican Hanukkah: small, poorly equipped army beats much larger, better-trained, better-equipped army. But: there’s beer and tequila.

Alfonso I of Aragon (reigned 1104-1134 AD) granted extensive estates, essentially the majority of his kingdom due to the absence of an heir, to the Knights Hospitaller and Knights Templar. These military orders, comprising professional warrior-monks, played a crucial role in the defense of the Crusader States in the Middle East. Though the initial attraction faced some reduction from Spanish nobility, it eventually proved successful, leading both orders to contribute knights to the Reconquista—the Templars in 1143 AD and the Hospitallers in 1148 AD. Furthermore, the Iberian peninsula witnessed the establishment of its own indigenous military orders. The Order of Calatrava, founded in 1158 AD, became renowned for its knights clad in distinctive black armor. The 1170s AD marked a notable period for the creation of additional military orders. The Order of Santiago was formed in 1170 AD, followed by Montjoy in Aragon in 1173 AD, Alcantara in 1176 AD, and in Portugal, the Order of Evora around 1178 AD. Notably, these local orders held a significant advantage in that they were not obligated to allocate a third of their revenue to a headquarters in the Middle East, unlike the Templars and Hospitallers. The surge in professional adventurers from various parts of Europe, particularly northern France, and Norman Sicily, was another noteworthy development. The allure of riches in southern Spain drew these warriors to join forces with Christian Spanish rulers, augmenting the military strength aligned against the Muslim forces in the region. Which military order do you find most fascinating in the context of the Reconquista—Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, or one of the local orders like the Order of Calatrava? #mylineage #armour #ancienthistory #militaryhistory #medievalist #medievalhistory #medievaltimes #medieval #heraldry #middleages #armor #medievalworld #warriorhistory #medievalknight #medievalarmor #knighthood #templarios #knightstemplar #templar #europeanhistory #reconquistahistory #iberiancrusades #medievalspain #historicalbattles #middleageswarfare #elcid #catolicos #cruzadas #crusades #deus https://lnkd.in/grvBKAZe

Today we mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a pivotal moment in our history. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces from over 12 nations landed on the beaches of Normandy to fight against tyranny and oppression. The bravery and sacrifice of those who fought on that day, and in the days that followed, will never be forgotten. We honor the memory of those who gave their lives for our freedom, and we express our deepest gratitude to the veterans who are still with us today. May their courage and selflessness continue to inspire us. We must teach our children and grandchildren the lessons of history so that they may understand the sacrifices made for the freedom we enjoy today. We must pass on the stories of courage, honor, and sacrifice so that future generations may learn from the past and strive for a better world. The Allied nations that landed on D-Day were: Australia Belgium Canada France Greece Netherlands New Zealand Norway Poland United Kingdom United States May we always remember the lessons of history and strive for a world where such sacrifices are never needed again.

Les Invalides, originally a complex of buildings containing museums and monuments all relating to the military history of France, as well as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, played a pivotal role during the French Revolution in 1789. Before the storming of the Bastille, which is often cited as the beginning of the French Revolution, insurgents sought to arm themselves adequately for the confrontation. In the early hours of July 14, 1789, they stormed Les Invalides and managed to seize approximately 32,000 rifles and 27 cannons. This significant cache of weapons was crucial for the insurgents, as it provided them with the means to challenge the royal authority and eventually capture the Bastille later that day. This act not only marked a decisive moment in the French Revolution but also demonstrated the strategic importance of Les Invalides as a military arsenal during this tumultuous period. The capture of these weapons from Les Invalides symbolized the power shift from the monarchy to the people, setting the stage for the profound changes that were to follow in French society and governance.
