On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we confront the harrowing reality of gender-based violence. The WHO estimates that 1 in 3 women globally have faced physical and/or sexual violence. The #GlobalShapers New Delhi Hub's 'Consent, Gender-Based Violence, and Male Allyship Project' stands as a beacon of change. This initiative addresses the roots of GBV by fostering conversations on consent, challenging harmful norms, and promoting male allyship. By engaging adolescents in schools and colleges, it equips young people—especially girls—with the knowledge to assert boundaries and recognize abusive behavior. As we observe the 16 Days of Activism, we are reminded of the urgent need to address and eliminate gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide. These forms of violence have devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities worldwide. Every day, countless women and girls face violence simply because of their gender. This must end. We stand in solidarity with survivors and those working tirelessly to create safer, more equitable societies. This period is a time for reflection, but more importantly, it is a call to action. We must all take responsibility to: Raise awareness about the prevalence of GBV and femicide. Support survivors in their healing journeys and empower them to thrive. Advocate for stronger policies and systems that hold perpetrators accountable. Educate ourselves and others to challenge harmful stereotypes and behaviors. Ending GBV and femicide requires systemic change, but also everyday actions in our workplaces, communities, and homes. Let's commit to being part of the solution. 16 Days in WA aims to raise awareness, motivate positive action and highlight organisations, agencies, communities and individuals taking action to end violence against women. Family and domestic violence fuels gender inequality, affecting women, children, and marginalised groups. Coercive control and tech abuse are harmful patterns that continue to impact victims. Despite progress, many still hold attitudes that reinforce sexism. We must keep raising awareness and challenging these views.

At Retizen, we’re joining the global movement with a 16-day online series dedicated to debunking common myths and misconceptions about sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). 𝗢𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 11 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸 Do both Genders perpetrate equally to violence? As there is a common misconception that violence is perpetrated equally by both genders. While it is true that women can also be perpetrators of violence, the reality is that most cases of gender-based violence involve men abusing women. This imbalance is largely driven by systemic power dynamics that reinforce inequality and foster environments where abuse can occur. To address this issue effectively, it is crucial to advocate for gender-sensitive interventions that tackle these power imbalances head-on. Standing Together to End Gender-Based Violence As we mark the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, we are reminded of the immense work that still lies ahead to create a world free of violence and inequality. At the World Bank, we understand that gender-based violence (GBV) is not only a violation of human rights but also a critical barrier to sustainable development, poverty reduction, and shared prosperity. The social and economic toll of GBV is staggering—impacting individuals, families, and entire communities. This year, as we join partners around the globe in amplifying the call to action, I am inspired by the resilience of survivors, the dedication of advocates, and the efforts of communities mobilizing for change. Together, we must: • Invest in prevention and response mechanisms including those of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment. • Support policies that empower and protect women and girls. • Challenge the societal norms and inequalities that perpetuate violence. The fight to end GBV is not just a women’s issue—it’s everyone’s responsibility. Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the launch of the #16DaysofActivism against Gender-based Violence: (Monday 25th Nov 2024 – Tuesday 10th Dec 2024) The theme for today is "IT STARTS WITH MEN" Men must self-reflect on societal expectations that equate masculinity with dominance, and redefine these concepts to dismantle gender-based violence. Education is vital; men should understand the impact of their actions and the importance of consent and respect. Open dialogues, therapy, workshops, and community programmes on healthy relationships can help. Men must also hold each other accountable, challenging misogyny and abuse. On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls that also marks the beginning of the 16 days of activism, the Institute for Global Health and Development is partnering to amplify the voices of the billions of people around the world who continue to be victims of violence just because they are female. We cannot continue to accept the gendered stereotypes that cluster women and girls into an inferior sub-category of human beings. One in 3 women will experience gender based violence within their lifetimes and that’s one too many. More often than not, the violence is perpetrated by their intimate partner or someone within their families. More often than not, the perpetrators never get into the arms of the judicial system. More often than not, the perpetrators are recidivants, with the connivance of neighbors, family members and the society at large. Violence has no place in our societies, it is dehumanizing and affects the dignity, health and wellbeing of women and girls. It is troubling to know that a large number of women still believe that it is normal to be beaten by a man if they refuse to have sex, don’t cook or neglect the children. Understanding gender-based violence is crucial for creating a safer and more equitable society. This pervasive issue encompasses various forms of violence, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse, all rooted in gender inequality. By examining the power dynamics and societal norms that perpetuate such violence, we can dismantle harmful structures and support survivors. Recognising that gender-based violence affects individuals of all genders, but disproportionately impacts women and marginalised communities, is essential. Education, advocacy, and policy reforms play vital roles in addressing this complex issue.
