I checked in with a client and asked how their new hire was going and they replied with "Everything is going great - they have made a few minor mistakes though". I was kind of in shock hearing that this was brought up after 2 days in the seat because isn't that to be expected?! Isn't that what typically happens when someone is learning something new?! We tell our kids, it's okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. Get back up and dust yourself off and try again. Why can't we offer the same courtesy to adults learning a new job? #newjob #newhire #contract #finance #accounting

Healthy Workplace Advocate. Status Quo Disruptor. Senior Audit and Accounting Leader. Compliance and Process Improvement. Investigations. Dog Mom
Age discrimination in hiring is alive and well, so it is good to keep that in mind. A recruiter contacted me earlier this week looking for a “high energy” Assistant Controller. I had a couple of people in mind to refer for the job, but my first thought was they were looking for youth. I asked the recruiter what “high energy”meant, but she didn’t explain it. She just said they needed qualified people with at least 10 years of experience. That means someone in their early 30s at minimum. Why dodge the original question? 🤷🏽♀️ Almost everyone I know on the job market in accounting is over 40 with a whole lot more than 10 years of experience. Finding a new job has been especially difficult for them. If you see “high energy” (or something similar) in a job description and you are over 40… It is a possible sign that they aren’t very inclusive. You can still put your name in the hat and hope for the best. But they are likely not looking for you or willing to pay fairly for your experience. Probably better to run for the hills. 🏃🏽♀️

Just saw a video from Ben Askins on YouTube that struck me as so true. He says "No company needs more than three rounds of interviews for any role. The qualifying call to make sure the candidate has the experience. The technical call or task to make sure they have the skills for the job. And then you have a cultural call or chat to basically make sure you are in line with company's values." So true! If your recruitment process is more than this then you have inefficiency. Also, make sure that your technical assessment is accurately reflecting the actual skills they need on the job (asking a potential accounts payable clerk how to deal with a gifted elephant doesn't let you know anything about their ability to quickly and accurately process financial transactions) and that your cultural discussions focus on what you really care about.
