Does your company have a "Populist CTO"? Or are you one of them? Tech people like to have fun, and their toy is technology. They enjoy experimenting with new tools, languages, and architectures, which is fine. However... Sometimes, they overcomplicate or engineer solutions that could have had simpler alternatives. This can result in a highly fragmented tech stack that is difficult to maintain. Occasionally, these approaches lead to unnecessary and expensive outcomes, adding unnecessary costs to the business. Among some. It's important to note that they don't do this in bad faith. I am confident they want the best for the business. What's worse is that I've observed CTOs and Engineering Managers who, more often than not, accept any new development request without careful consideration. I refer to them as "populist CTOs" who prioritize the wishes of the development team (devs) over the general long-term interests of the company. This doesn't mean saying "NO" 100% of the time. But, while listening team requests can positively impact team morale and employee retention, it's not about giving them a blank check. I think there are 2 reasons these sort of views persist. 1. They provide a distraction from the inadequacies of the person professing them. It's like they are saying not to look at the other things they are sh*t at because they can code (and before anyone starts I'm not necessarily referring to soft skills here) 2. They provide a ready made excuse for disrespecting and disagreeing with leadership that didn't come through the same career path as they did. A case of why should they pay attention to this person - they can't code.

How can you verify/validate the code and gain trust from your team, if you can't read the code?

#leaders should be able to do the work of subordinates and you learn best by doing their job. Not only will you improve your skills, but you will also gain the trust of your staff, showing them that you care enough to understand what they experience and how they feel. #developers #leadershipdevelopment
