Around this time last year, before I found my current role, I was seeing a trend in job postings that require specific industry experience for video production roles. While it's understandable that certain industries have unique nuances, I believe it's time to rethink how we define expertise in this field. Insisting on "must have experience with video in _______ industry" for roles that pay significantly below market rates is, frankly, a disservice to talented cinematographers and videographers who have honed their craft across various industries and contexts. It's not about shooting for a specific product or sector; it's about mastering the art and technical skills of video production that transcend any single industry. Sure, shooting for a granola bar company might require a different approach than leading creative direction for a global brand like Coca-Cola. Even wedding videography and photography is an exception, but could still fall under event videography and could be performed by someone who has experience shooting and editing for a sports team. Are you following me? Good. That level of specialization is niche and should be recognized accordingly. However, the essence of video production—storytelling, technical proficiency, creativity—remains consistent across diverse applications. Let's celebrate the versatility and adaptability of skilled professionals who can bring their expertise from different industries to any project. They've spent years learning and refining their craft to deliver high-quality content, whether it's for a tech startup, a nonprofit organization, or a multinational corporation. If you are asking for specific industry experience when hiring a creative and only offering $15-20/hour, for example, you are not going to get the caliber of talent you are looking for and it brings us back to the timeless saying, "beggers can't be choosers." #VideoProduction #Cinematography #Videography #IndustryExpertise #CreativeSkills #JobPostings

How do you approach filming a promotional video for a fashion show with just one model, a dancing troupe, and one location? Working with limited resources can be challenging as it restricts diversity and coverage, but as a filmmaker, it's essential to deliver high-quality content regardless. I've gleaned valuable insights from studying the work of one of my favorite music video directors, Director K 'DK'. DK has mastered the art of creating captivating visuals from minimal resources, as seen in Wizkid's Essence or Diamond Music Video, among others. Here are five key lessons I've learned, and you can too: 1. Engaging Subjects: Ensure that everything or everyone in front of the camera grabs attention. Highlight unique features of your models and scout for intriguing elements in the environment to capture as B-roll footage. 2. Composition: Collaborate with a skilled Director of Photography like Stanley Adio to capture shots from the most visually striking angles. Since you're limited to one location, explore various perspectives to maximize its potential. 3. Talent Direction: Pre-plan and research compelling poses and positions for your talent to enhance the visual appeal of your shots. 4. Energy Dynamics: Pay close attention to energy levels throughout the filming process. Whether it's the movements of the camera or the performers, here, you can see I harnessed the dynamic elements like the dancers' footwork, the drummers' beats to infuse energy. All these energy bits came in handy in the edit. 5. Editing: Piece together all elements in the editing room, utilizing your B-roll footage, energy-infused moments, and visually captivating shots to create a compelling final product despite the constraints of limited locations and talent. Starting out as a creative in videography, cinematography, or any creative field can feel like an uphill battle, especially when funds are tight. But here’s the thing—I’ve learned that the early days, when you’re not getting paid, can be the most valuable in shaping your future. *Embrace Free Work as an Investment* When you're just starting out, think of free work as your playground. It’s where you can experiment, make mistakes, and grow without the pressure of client expectations. Every project, whether it’s shooting a friend’s short film or creating content for a local non-profit, is a chance to refine your skills. Over time, these projects become the building blocks of your portfolio—the proof of your talent and potential. *Build Relationships, Not Just a Portfolio* The creative world thrives on connections. By offering your services for free, especially to local businesses, non-profits, or fellow creatives, you’re opening doors to future opportunities. It’s not just about getting your work seen; it’s about building relationships. These collaborations can lead to referrals and, eventually, paid gigs. Plus, sharing your work on platforms like Instagram or LinkedIn can help you connect with a broader audience and attract potential clients. *Choose Projects with Purpose* Not all free work is created equal. Be strategic. Focus on projects that align with your creative vision and have the potential to open doors in the future. If a project excites you and helps you develop your unique style, it’s worth your time. And remember, every piece of content you create adds value to your portfolio and your personal brand. *Get Creative with Limited Resources* You don’t need the latest gear to create quality work. When starting out, use what you have and get creative. Natural light, DIY setups, and affordable editing tools can go a long way. What truly matters is your storytelling. A strong narrative can shine through, even with minimal resources. *Document Your Journey* Keep track of your projects and reflect on what you’ve learned. This isn’t just for personal growth—it’s also content you can share to show your progress and build your brand. And don’t shy away from feedback. Constructive criticism, whether from peers or mentors, is invaluable in helping you improve. *Gradually Move into Paid Work* Start small, but start. As your confidence grows, so should your rates. But even as you begin to charge for your services, don’t lose sight of the passion that brought you here. Keep a few passion projects on the side—they’ll keep you inspired and could lead to unexpected opportunities. Remember, free work is not a setback. It’s an investment in yourself, your skills, and your future. Each project is a step closer to becoming the videographer or cinematographer you aspire to be. The key is to stay focused, keep learning, and trust the process. The payoff will come. Am I missing anything? connect and follow for more❤️💪

When I started, I knew nothing about cinematography and editing. But my hunger for learning and confidence made a huge impact on my social media journey. ✅ Here’s how I did it: ⭐️ Fake It Till You Make It: Sometimes, you need to project confidence. Now, I handle 6 to 7 social media accounts and side projects smoothly. ⭐️ Confidence is Key: Faking it not only gave me the confidence to tackle new challenges but also expanded my learning abilities, opening up new opportunities. Sometimes, we all have to fake it to make it. It builds confidence and helps us learn and grow. Follow my journey for more insights and tips!

Choosing the right videographer for your company’s marketing materials matter. As an award-winning creative agency, we know what makes a video “good” and what will resonate with your core customer base. Not all cinematographers are created equally, but yes, you can find someone who “does video” anywhere. Here’s a list of various factors to consider when choosing the right creative agency for your projects (because, let’s face it, you want the project done right the first time!). 💡 Portfolio – The proof is in the pudding with video work. Review the agency’s video style, transitions, and creativity. 💡 Expertise – A well-seasoned agency will have ideas and similar experience in your industry or related field. 💡 Reviews – Look online to see people’s experience working with that video agency; you can also always ask for client references. 💡 Communication – Ensure you’re happy with the communication style of the video agency and make sure you feel confident they understand your vision. 💡 Technology – Technology and equipment are necessary to create award-winning videos. Inquire about the equipment the creative team will use to curate your video.
