Great advice by Samir for Fund Managers raising from Family Offices (link to x tweet 👇🏼): VC EMs that are not spin-outs: Family Offices are your most likely investors. Remember these 4 things: 1) For most FO's, VC is a participation sport and often as important as the returns are. The service/experience can be everything. You can differentiate through better reporting, community efforts, transparency, and touch. 2) Get to really know them before you start pitching what you do. Ask questions about their background, and understand what they care about before going into the pitch. Still see too many EMs go right into pitch mode. You can't offer a product unless you know who you are speaking to and what they care about. 3) The strategy is different when speaking to the principal vs. investment team member. For the former, you need to make sure to find common ground, and connect with the heart. For investment folks, you need to make sure you understand their incentives. 4) Don't burn bridges. Sometimes FOs go through changes on the fly. I've seen some GPs get upset when people pass. Don't. Sometimes it's truly a "not now".

There’s an investor in our space. He’s raised way more money than me, and has a portfolio size that takes 9 digits to write out. A lot of people are looking to replicate his business, but I’m not. Here’s why… To raise the amount of money you need for a portfolio like that, you have to operate at massive scale. Right now, I know every investor in our projects. And I know them pretty well. When I started this business one of the first questions I asked myself was, what do I want: 1 - Massive portfolio, thousands of investors, focus on team & scale Or 2 - Modest portfolio, hundreds of investors, focus on relationships I decided option 2 was best for me. I want my portfolio to grow, and I want my investor base to grow, but I don’t want it to become a scenario where I don’t know who’s investing in our deals. I want to know all of my investors, and I want them to know me personally. So I’m ok with a modest portfolio and hyper personalized way of getting new investors instead of operating at scale.

Investor Pitch feedback, personal story - A few years back I was pitching to one of the large VC funds. One of the earliest pitches in my entrepreneurial journey. It was a virtual meeting. I had shared my screen & was taking everyone through my pitch deck. When I completed and looked at the screen, everyone was checking their phones. I felt bad, then. When I looked back however, the problem was me, not the investors. The story telling, the narrative etc was all over the place. The numbers didn't align with what I was saying. The result - we would like to stay in touch & see more xyz. As expected. Through the sessions that I do with founders over the weekends, it is these real world learnings that I intend to share so that a lot of first time founders don't make the same mistakes like I did.
