July is disability pride month. I hope organizations use this time to reflect and ponder over their procedures, processes, and policies that perpetuate ableism in their workplaces. I often find that those who work within areas whose mission is to support, foster, and create inclusive environments through their advocacy work are the gatekeepers. Ironically, I've worked in environments designed to help disabled students but lack the same support for their disabled staff. For those who can make impactful changes at their organization, I ask that you not "other" disabled people because disability is a part of the human life cycle. Invite disabled people to the table and ask for their feedback/input. Disabled people must be included in the decision-making process. This is how you form inclusion. Too often, disabled folks are left out of the process until the end. Did you know that July marks Disability Pride Month? We are proud to stand with the disabled community, advocating for inclusion, accessibility, and equality. Public Health England outline that disabled people make up a significant minority within England: one in five of the population are disabled. They also state that disabled people experience disproportionately higher rates of domestic abuse. Not only do disabled people experience higher rates of #DomesticAbuse, but they also experience more barriers to accessing support, such as health and social care services and domestic abuse services. Disabled people also experience domestic abuse for longer periods of time, and more severe and frequent abuse than non-disabled people. Disability Pride Month is not just about awareness but also about creating a more inclusive world, and more inclusive services, for all. 🏘️ Advocacy group calls for more support to help people with a disability buy a home🏘️ 🫵Housing is a critical issue for people with disabilities. 👩🏻🦽 🇦🇺All disability participants don't want to live in group homes. 🏘️ ✊In fact, group homes are almost the last place they want to live in.✊ 🤝Serious action to ensure accessible and affordable housing for people with disabilities.🤝 💥El Gibbs and Disability Advocacy Network Australia (DANA) Ltd have been speaking up on this issue.💥 There is a need to remove the outdated forced poverty trap in the special disability trust regulations. 👉🏾 In short: Australians with a disability are less likely to own a home than residents without one. 🙏The Disability Advocacy Network Australia says many clients are spending up to 80 per cent of their income on rent, leaving little room to save. 👉🏾What's next? The organisation says shared equity arrangements could be used to help more people get into the property market. We are The LUNA Project a charity run by and for Disabled young people. And Disability Pride is woven into the fabric of our work. If you asked any member of our team they could tell you many a story about being disabled. They might choose to tell you about the disabled joy we experience when we come together as a collective. The feeling of solidarity when you aren't the only mobility aid user on the street. Or maybe they’ll tell you about the second-hand happiness you get watching somebody you care about accessing the aids they need to navigate the world with freedom. But along with the happiness and joy come the stories of isolation, ableism, discrimination and loneliness. It's being left out at school or in extracurricular activities, it's the lack of understanding when hospital becomes more familiar than home, access fails that limit independence and simply a society that isn't built for us- disabled people trying to thrive. But there is space for disability pride in both of those. Having Disability Pride does not mean being unwaveringly positive about disability or ignoring the times when it's unthinkably difficult- the two can and do coexist. By creating accessible resources, exposing people to disabled joy and focusing on educating young people about disability and how to better support disabled peers we hope that we can mitigate some of those feelings of loneliness, isolation and lack of understanding. Striving to make sure future disabled young people have better experiences than we did. We make resources, work in schools and educate professionals but bigger than that we are the community we needed- We are LUNA. Today, in honor of Disability Pride Month, Abled Voices, our employee group supporting those with disabilities, their caretakers, and allies, hosted Taryn (Debold) Lagonigro, co-founder of Extra Lucky Moms. This community provides support, education, and advocacy for parents of children with disabilities, promoting inclusion and empowerment. The session was a chance to come together and learn. One tip I appreciated was: “You can never go wrong by asking someone: ‘What is the right way for me to say this? What would you prefer?’” Asking with genuine curiosity shows care and promotes a judgment-free dialogue. To support coworkers who live with or care for those with disabilities, consider asking how they’re doing or what challenges they face. We all want a decent quality of life for ourselves and those we care about. Yet two million Disabled people are trapped in deep poverty, unable to afford to eat or to heat their home. Social security doesn’t cover the hidden or additional costs of disability – things like electricity to run vital equipment and transport to get out of your home. And too many workplaces are unwilling to employ Disabled people. That’s why the Campaign for Disability Justice is calling on the Government to work with organisations led by Disabled people to guarantee: Opportunity To support employers to create more accessible jobs and to ensure Disabled people have voluntary access to good quality employment support, without the threat of sanctions. Security To guarantee a decent standard of living for Disabled people, in or out of work, that adequately accounts for the additional costs they face. Improve social security so that everyone can live a decent life, whether they’re in work or not. Respect To lead the way in building a society that respects and values Disabled people and supports the development of local Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs). July is Disability Pride Month! Did you know that people with disabilities make up roughly 15% of the world’s population?! Each colour of the Disability Pride flag represents a different branch of the disability community. ❤️ = Physical disabilities. 💛 = Neurodiversity. 🤍 = Invisible disabilities and non diagnosis. 💙 = Mental illness. 💚 = Sensory disabilities (blindness/deafness). 🖤 = Representation for victims of ableist violence and abuse. Why do we need Disability Pride Month? Because we need to recognise people with a disability for who they truly are. We don’t need pity. We need to be celebrated for our achievements, despite our struggles. We need to celebrate the strengths and the weaknesses and really embrace diversity! It’s sad to think that ableism is so deeply embedded in the attitudes of today’s society. Knowing how difficult it is to change this perspective, we will continue to push forward for the sake of inclusion.
