❓ Did you know how and why ship classification societies originated?
⚓ Classification Societies emerged between the 17th and 18th centuries to meet the insurance market's need for truthful and reliable information on maritime incidents to calculate insurance premiums. At the time, the only available information on the quality and condition of ships came from interviews with captains conducted in bars and cafes.
☕ A historical gathering place for merchants, marine insurers, and others connected to the maritime world was Edward Lloyd's coffee house in London. Subsequently, in 1760, the coffee house patrons created a "Register Society" with the objective of classifying ships based on their condition and technical characteristics.
🤝 In 1834, a new ship classification society, the "Lloyd's Register of Shipping," was established by merchants, shipowners, and insurers.
🔎 Today, the periodic inspections conducted by the registers on ships are as follows:
Annual inspection of hull and machinery.
Dock and boiler inspection every 2.5 years.
Special inspection of hull, machinery, and shafts every 5 years.
