With the 2024 elections now one year away, the first of a series of special reports from the Wells Fargo Investment Institute helps to summarize the key issues our strategists see as having the greatest impact on investment strategy in 2024 and beyond. I would highlight Table 1 on page 2 which shows the S&P 500 recorded positive returns in 20 of 24 U.S. presidential election years going back to 1928. However, it retraced election-year gains the following year in 8 of those 20 instances. New blog: The UK’s fiscal rules may constrain growth no matter who wins the general election Following the 2022 Truss/Kwarteng mini-budget which resulted in UK borrowing costs soaring, both parties have reaffirmed their commitment to fiscal rules. But the definitions embedded in these rules should be debated further given they are potentially constraining future labour productivity growth, writes Thomas Aubrey. He warns that: "While it might be true that no one cares about the detail of fiscal rules including what does and does not count as public debt, such rules may matter more than voters or markets think."
