Can sports performance training be too sport specific? I think so. If all you're doing in the gym is trying to replicate the exact movements of the sport, then performance training is probably increasing the risk of overuse injury by hammering on the same exact movement patterns that are performed in the sport. Every sport degrades the body over time through repetition of a set of movements - a good training program should counteract this. Programs should be designed to increase sport specific athleticism; they should not be designed to look exactly, in every way, like the sport itself.

A few weeks ago, I discussed the training methods of young athletes and how I have observed that many have began training exactly like a bodybuilder. While I stand by my views, it is not false to say that simply learning and progressing the core movements (e.g squat, lunge, hinge, horizontal push/pull, vertical push/pull etc.) will hugely benefit an athlete’s performance if they have never trained before. The difference in carryover between slightly different exercise variations will be rather small, especially when comparing those movements to actually practising your sport. Therefore, for young athletes training in the gym, focus on learning the adequate technique for the movements mentioned and progress them over time. That will be a simple and effective way to maximise your on-field performance.
