Problematic Shale We drilled fissured/fractured Smectite. Its dispersive mineralogy increased the risk of experiencing wellbore creeping and collapse issues. We used minimum overbalance and fluid loss to minimize fluid invasion. We kept salt concentration high to drive the water out of the formation. We drilled using low surface rpm and avoided back-reaming to avoid hitting and whirling the pipe around the wellbore walls. We tripped out slowly to avoid sudden stops created by ledges, thus minimizing the vibrations that could affect simultaneously multiple spots along the wellbore. We had a detailed roadmap that included the min/max operating parameters to achieve the most efficient drilling performance. #drillingengineering #shale

We're all familiar with these classic pairings: peanut butter & jelly, Luke & Leia, milk & cookies, and of course everyone's favorite, ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil mixture) & stemming stone (# 78 pea gravel). Okay...maybe that last one is not exactly classic, but it is a dynamic duo that we rely on heavily here at Piedmont Drilling & Blasting. Combined with a booster, ANFO is an effective tool to blast rock. The stemming stone ensures that the energy created from the blast is transferred into the rock, where it should be, instead of throwing material up out of the hole.
