My 3 biggest struggles as a new Facility Manager were: Talent Tug-of-War Funding Frenzy Blame Game As a fresh-faced Facility Manager, stepping into the realm of oversight meant diving into a sea of challenges. 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘇𝘆: Securing resources for pivotal upgrades often felt like a high-stakes juggling act. From modern tech integrations to essential maintenance, navigating the financial landscape was no easy feat. This took patience and good timing to get things I needed for the job. 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲: The blame tends to echo in the halls of a facility when things falter, regardless of the factors at play. Overcoming the misconception that every hiccup falls solely on my shoulders required finesse and open communication. I was an FM on a contract where I wasn’t allowed to fix anything. The clients hated me for it even though they were the ones that put it in the contract to keep costs low. This was never fully resolved, however telling people upfront and having great communication solved half the issues that came from this. 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗴-𝗼𝗳-𝗪𝗮𝗿: Rallying a team of top-notch individuals dedicated to our collective goals was an art in itself. The challenge lay not only in hiring but in nurturing and retaining these invaluable assets. I don’t think this problem if you have a large team will be 100% resolved, but I can try. In cases I had control to hire and fire, I generally had a good record here but when I didn’t, I generally didn’t have a good record here 😆. I love being in Operations and Facility Management. Being in a senior leadership role has given me the chance to make a difference in site management.
