As we get ready for the start of the new year is it time to rethink your career? like many I have, what will keep me from leaving is the training I was offered for the HAAS equipment we are using. Will be going in January, this training will fit well with the Preventative Maintenance program and further my understanding of the equipment and diagnostics for repairs or Preventative maintenance needed. It was said this training did not fit Maintenances wheel house. What does that really mean does not fit our wheelhouse? I have my thoughts on why they said this but will keep my thoughts to myself. Why train gets denied as progress and modernizing happens bothers me, this is needed if not necessary to retain and offer growth potential for existing and new employees. The hiring market is cooling but the need for technicians is still great and the need for skilled employee retention should be a concern Myself not that well educated when it comes to college or a degree, a lot of hands on and learning from others has taught me a lot and help build my knowledge and my career. Mechanical repair is my specialty, what I enjoy so this is my strongest asset, making me have to learn and work harder at the other aspects of my job. We here in Maintenance and Preventative Maintenance are considered multi-crafts meaning we do almost everything needed to make or keep the work going . In someways this makes getting a job completed easier not waiting on several different shops/crafts to do each of their parts, but does not mean you do not need a diverse group of technicians with backgrounds in other fields ( electrical electronics hydraulic pneumatics welding fabrication machinist etc..) Also it is important to have good leadership and management. This is something for another conversation.
