Fulltime family care partner. Dementia and Care Partner Advocate. Teepa Snow Certified Independent Consulant and Trainer. Founder of UniquelyMeInitiatives.
From "Caregiver" to "Care Partner" in Dementia Care. Beth Nolan, Director of Research and Policy at Teepa Snow's Positive Approach to Dementia Care (PAC), in a recent podcast conversation with Anita Abu Bakar, President and Founder of MIASA Malaysia, shed light on how the term ‘#CarePartner’ brings to the forefront the concept of #relationalCare and #support in the context of a #positiveApproach to #dementiaCare. Using real-life examples, she explained how this term reflects #partnership, #respect and a #sharedJourney rather than a one-sided act of giving care or help. The shift in terminology is not just a #language choice, but a recognition that words have the #power to shape our perceptions, #relationships, and our #actions. Thus embracing the term ‘Care Partner' acknowledges the #agency, active role, and #dignity of individuals in the care relationship and redefines the care and support experience based on #empathy and #sharedHumanity. It enables the person with dementia and their care partner to work together as #equals, creating a more positive and supportive environment for both parties. As discussed in the podcast, this framework is applicable beyond the context of dementia care. #mentalHealth #disability #equality #rights #care #caregiver #caregiving
