Wedding planning, in fact planning in general. So on Sunday myself and Michelle (fiancee) headed over to Hednesford for a wedding fair. As we worked our way round the stands chatting and laughing with the holders. A question bubbled in my mind, would it be wrong to think about using a project management tool for planning our wedding? I mean a wedding, besides the personal and emotional attachment which we will all feel, is still no different to any other event that requires planning and preparation as well as time and patience. The same is true for your website, if you don’t plan how it’s going to look, work or even how it is structured, the chances are it will fall down on itself. People are often surprised that I started my career in weddings. Although it was brief, I definitely learned a lot. Here are my top three takeaways that I brought from weddings into corporate: 1. Stay calm under pressure & embrace adaptability There’s a reason that wedding planning has a reputation to be stressful; you’re working with family dynamics, financial investment from multiple stakeholders, and the pressure that it’s someone’s “most important day of their life.” Whether it’s putting on a reassuring face when the bride breaks a heel, or when a keynote microphone stops working mid session, it’s the same type of calm that allows event professionals to make decisions in crisis. 2. Creativity wins Memories are valuable; from a cherished family dance to an unforgettable experience on a show floor. Whether the objective is sales or not, happiness sells - how we leave someone feeling after interacting with us or our company's product is what will be remembered first, not necessarily the specs of the product. 3. Teamwork really does make the dream work Cliche as it may sound, it’s so true. I can’t imagine a stronger working bond than the one created onsite during the delirious fatigue that we experience together. Teams are built stronger through the respect of each other’s craft and open communication - that’s what creates success. Example: nobody should ever ask me to create a floral centerpiece, but if you need an amenity basked pulled together or a salesforce campaign created, I’m your girl!

I had a conversation with a few planners a couple of wees ago, about how some clients would want them to create a budget summary without being commissioned for their services and wanted to know how to go about it. Having had a couple of experiences myself with the below meme being the end result of my being nice... 😫😭 This is what i'll say: As an event planner, creating a budget summary for an event requires a considerable amount of time and effort. The process involves reaching out to multiple vendors and suppliers, trying to negotiate quotes to match the client's budget, and waiting endlessly for a response. Planners may need to make multiple phone calls and create mood boards to provide vendors with a clear understanding of what the client expects, which can take hours of work. It is understandable that planners may be hesitant to provide a budget summary for an event they have not been commissioned for. The work that goes into creating a budget summary can be extensive, and without a formal agreement with the client, planners risk not being compensated for their time and effort. To all my fellow planners out there, I know how hard we work to bring events to life and make them memorable. You deserve to be compensated for your time and effort. I also recognize that sometimes, clients may not fully understand the amount of work required to create a budget summary. As a result, we apologize to future clients when planners refuse to create a budget summary before being commissioned. I'll conclude by saying, event planners work tirelessly to ensure that events are successful, and creating a budget summary is a crucial part of that process. It is only fair that planners are compensated for their hard work and time. We hope that clients can understand and appreciate the effort that goes into planning an event and work with their planners to create an amazing experience.
