A bit of a long read on the Katchatheevu issue. I anticipate that the Modi administration’s challenging foreign policies might further strain India's relations with its neighboring countries, potentially jeopardizing existing agreements between them. #Katchatheevu #SriLanka #India #Modi

Part I : https://lnkd.in/eUfBeNuw Part II: https://lnkd.in/ePr8anW8 #TamilNadu politicians have consistently raised the issue of the uninhabited #Katchatheevu island, not only during election season but also as a strategy to encourage illegal fishermen from Tamil Nadu (TN) to trespass into the Northern and Eastern waters of #SriLanka. However, the longstanding dispute remains unresolved. Coastal fishermen from TN, often hired by influential politically-connected figures who own bottom trawlers, engage in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters, thus perpetuating the issue. Nevertheless, these attempts prove futile, as Katchatheevu has been under Sri Lankan jurisdiction since 1974, when India could not prove its ownership, as indicated in a report of the MFA, India in 1974. The Katchatheevu island issue is currently sub judice, with two writ petitions (Nos. 561 (2008) and 430 (2013)) filed in the Supreme Court of India.

Ladakh: Balancing Development and Identity Ladakh, a breathtaking region nestled in the Himalayas, has garnered recent attention due to ongoing protests. While Ladakh holds strategic importance for India, its residents are expressing concerns about their cultural identity and environmental well-being. The Call for Autonomy:- Following a 2019 decision, Ladakhis, particularly in the Kargil district, feel their cultural voice has been diminished. They advocate for Sixth Schedule status, granting them greater autonomy in governing local matters like land use and agriculture – aspects crucial for preserving their unique way of life. Now the main question is what is sixth schedule? · Empowerment: The Sixth Schedule allows for the formation of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in these tribal areas. These councils have the power to make laws on specific matters that directly impact the lives of the tribal communities. · Local Control: ADCs can legislate on issues like land use, management of forests, water resources, inheritance of property, social customs, and even marriage and divorce within their jurisdictions. · Legislative Limits: Laws passed by ADCs require the assent of the state governor before coming into effect. This ensures some level of oversight and alignment with broader state laws. · Protection of Rights: The Sixth Schedule serves as a safeguard for the tribal communities' cultural identity and traditional practices. It helps them preserve their way of life and decision-making power over matters specific to their communities. Environmental Stewardship:- Ladakh's pristine environment is under pressure from climate change and development. Local residents are understandably concerned and seek stronger environmental safeguards to protect this fragile ecosystem. Moving Forward:- Finding a sustainable path for Ladakh requires a delicate balance between development and environmental protection. Recognizing the importance of Ladakhi culture and traditions is vital. Let's foster a productive dialogue, By understanding the reasons behind the protests, we can find solutions that ensure Ladakh's future prosperity while respecting its unique identity and environment. #Ladakh #India #Development #Sustainability #Culture

The political situation in the Maldives is getting more complicated, as the opposition parties are planning to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu. They are unhappy with his foreign policy, which favors China over India, and his alleged involvement in corruption and nepotism. The parliament witnessed a violent clash on Sunday, when the opposition refused to approve four of his cabinet members. Curious to know how this will affect the stability and security of the Maldives and its neighboring countries. Do you have any insights or opinions on this? the Kashmir conflict has its roots in the 1947 partition of British India. The UN resolutions calling for a plebiscite in Kashmir date back to 1948-49, when the concept of self-determination was still evolving in international law. This made the international community more hesitant to intervene. But there are developments in international law and norms, the international community should be more willing to take a principled stand in support of the Kashmiri people's right to self-determination, rather than being constrained by the historical context of the 1947 partition. The right to self-determination is now a well-established principle of international law that should be applied consistently. #Kashmir
