📍 The #GoldmanPrize is heading to Malaysia! From October 13 - 17, the Goldman Environmental Prize will be on the ground at Asia-Pacific Climate Week in Johor. Prize winners attending include: 1️⃣ Julien Vincent (Australia, 2022): Because of Julien’s activism, four of Australia's major banks and insurance companies will end funding for coal projects by 2030. His organizing has produced a challenging financial landscape for the Australian coal industry. 2️⃣ Niwat Roykaew (Thailand, 2022): In February 2020, Niwat and the Mekong community’s advocacy resulted in the termination of the Upper Mekong River rapids blasting project, which would have destroyed 248 miles of the Mekong to deepen navigation channels for Chinese cargo ships. The biodiversity-rich Mekong River’s fisheries, tributaries, wetlands, and floodplains are a vital lifeline for more than 65 million people. 3️⃣ Paul Sein Twa (Myanmar, 2020): Seeking to preserve both the environment and Karen culture in Myanmar, in December 2018 Paul led his people in establishing a 1.35-million-acre peace park—a unique and collaborative community-based approach to conservation—in the Salween River basin. 4️⃣ Prigi Arisandi (Indonesia, 2011): Prigi initiated a local, Indonesian movement to stop industrial pollution from flowing into the Surabaya River, which provides drinking water for three million people. 5️⃣ Sereivathana Tuy (Cambodia, 2010): Sereivathana introduced innovative, low-cost solutions to mitigate human-elephant conflict in Cambodia, empowering local communities to cooperatively participate in endangered Asian elephant conservation. #ClimateWeekAP UNDP in Asia and the Pacific UN Climate Change UN Environment Programme

In a sobering piece, Rob Jackson argues in The Guardian that #methane gas "provides our best, and perhaps only, lever for shaving peak global temperatures over the next few decades." While most methane gas is produced from tropical wetlands, like those within the Amazon, these well-known ecosystems aren't the only source. Another culprit? A warming arctic. "The north needs snow and ice for life. #ClimateChange is hitting us harder here... If you take away the most important part–the cold–it cascades across ecosystems and cultures," shares Tero Mustonen, 2023 #GoldmanPrize winner from Finland. Tero and his organization, Snowchange, are taking action to halt the methane feedback loop by restoring peatlands throughout Finland. He notes, "I decided: ‘I must press every button in my power to convey how bad this is.'" Read the full story and find out how individuals can contribute to methane reduction as well! https://bit.ly/4dMkRQG 📸 // Mika Honkalinna
