On February 23rd and 24th I had the opportunity to both compete in the DECA Pacific Northwest Career Development Conference as well as assist in managing the event. Doing both was quite an undertaking but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Here are some things I learned from managing this event! 💬 Communication 💬 From inception to execution, communication is at the forefront of everything. Establishing early on who are the stakeholders, subject matter experts, and event producers is critical to how you will establish communication lines, how often check-ins are required, and how they wish to be communicated with (whether by email memo, in depth check-ins, or meetings). When managing a large scale event there are many hands that are helping (thankfully!) and everyone needs to be on the same page all the way down to the day of event. 🙋 Volunteers 🙋 As an event manager you’re unable to do everything on your own so without their help the conference could not have happened! We needed helpers to assist with pre-conference signage and room set up. Day of they assisted with directing parking, timing, escorting students from their prep area to their competition rooms setting out dinner and breakfast. 🪧 Signage 🪧 Having proper signage makes a world of a difference for attendees. On campus, students needed to walk from our main building over to the buildings where the competitive events were. Shoreline CC’s campus is gorgeous but it can also be a bit confusing to find your way around. Correct and enough signage allows for foot traffic to flow appropriately and minimizes bottlenecking. In turn this adds to the overall experience for those at the conference! 🏅The cherry on top was winning 3rd in State for the Individual Event: Travel and Tourism and 2nd in Entrepreneurship: Starting a Business with my partner Andrew Kariuki! We’ll be taking our product to the next level at ICDC in Austin!

My phone blew up today with news of Junior State of America (JSA) winding down after 90 years. For a '90s high school student, JSA was formative (I was a Mayor, a Lt. Governor, and went to Georgetown & Montezuma). What made JSA special? 1️⃣ 👫 💡 Diversity of people & ideas. NJ high school was ... beige, racially and intellectually. At JSA, kids (and their parents) came from all over the place, with ideas which were all over the place. The most diverse environment I experienced until - a decade later - HBS. 2️⃣ 🛩 Travel. 🏛 DC, 🗽 NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco. Without parents, and cell phones! Opened up new worlds for me. 3️⃣ 🗣 Speaking and Conflict. Once upon a time I didn't like public speaking (I know, hard to believe). JSA's approach to debate taught not just public speaking & opposing ideas in public, but also building friendships & leaving public conflict behind when the debate was done. Unique in today's world. 4️⃣ 📜 Paperwork. Hear me out. JSA had a lot of paperwork -- Resolutions. Agendas. Membership rolls, all with minimal computers. Effectively navigating bureaucracy is perhaps the defining skill of adulting. Without even realizing it, I learned to do that in JSA. 5️⃣ 🤗 Friends & 🤝 Leaders. JSA alums of that era became lawyers, business leaders, political leaders, social justice activists, and even rabbis. Several married each other. People like Israel "Izzy" Klein, Cindy Chen, Rachel Derkits-Gelman, and Abby Gordon still influence how I think about friendship, politics, and even parenting today. JSA's moment may have passed. No doubt other groups will fill these roles for the post-COVID high school generation. But it will be missed.
It is with a heavy heart that the Board of Directors of the Junior State of America (JSA) is announcing the closure and dissolution of the organization effective August 31, 2024. After 90 years of inspiring student engagement in civics and activism, and after long business considerations, we have made this difficult decision to officially close the organization. While this chapter of JSA's history is coming to an end, the impact of our organization will continue to resonate through the hundreds of thousands of lives touched by our programs. Thank you for being a part of the JSA community and for your unwavering commitment to being the people who make a difference. Read the full announcement at https://bit.ly/4ciIIqc.

New year, new challenge… Participate in as many case competitions as possible and write down what I learn. With that being said, here’s a list of things I learned at the Annual Xlerate Lazaridis First Year Case Conference this past weekend: ⭐️ Take care of yourself Talking to groups after the presentations revealed how different groups handled the time constraints. Some stayed together and worked all throughout the night, while others were finished working and home before midnight the day of. Making sure to take care of yourself physically and mentally while on a time crunch is essential for both yourself and your team. ⭐️Take risks Some of the best presentations I saw were based on ideas I would have never thought of and went with, showing me how important creativity and risk taking are in these competitions. Working with these risky ideas are never easy, but it is this tough nature that builds essential skills in you and your team. ⭐️ Less is more Speaking with judges and other delegates including some finalists revealed a trend that a well thought out and simple solution is sometimes better than one that is more complex. Amazing job to my teammates Alex Gan, Joanna Wang, and Mark Wu, I’m so proud of our final product!

Last week I had the absolute honor of not only getting to see my daughter compete at a national level, but was also able to help as a judge for the National Speech and Debate Association, 2024 National Tournament. The entire experience really brought a few things to my attention: 1. We have some absolutely amazing minds in this generation that is coming up. They were absolutely incredible to see. 2. The skills they are learning, both in Speech events and Debate events, are such assets to the workplace. They have an amazing ability to see things from different perspectives, convey confidence, and persuade you to hear their voice and their view point. 3. There is nothing more educational, than to try something, and have to work hard to succeed at it, even through failures. The entire competition was over 6,700 of the best student speakers. So many of them came and gave 100%, but not all walked away with the trophy at the end. The thing that stood out to me most the whole week was how many of them truly still walked away with smiles, motivated, and absolutely hungry to come back and show us what they have again next year. This lesson of how to learn through failure is such an asset. This is the live stream from several of the speech events. My favorites were the Humorous Interpretation and Duo Interpretation events, and Extemporaneous Debate (which is a different stream). Heads up it's long, but Humorous and Duo are pretty amazing to watch! https://lnkd.in/dCVAdRdY

The 'RACTA was the missing piece!' was from a student who started RACTA with her CRC credential already. Both students that have done this so far have said they have zero regrets and would still recommend #RACTA even to those with their CRC already. Truly understanding the big picture, the why, and building transferrable skills and confidence. Priceless. This is not just a CRC course, this THE Risk Adjustment Coding Training Academy. https://lnkd.in/eJJPtYSN
