Last night I had the privilege of leading a professional development session at Bright Horizons with these incredible educators! We explored key strategies for understanding children's behavior and fostering a positive learning environment by focusing on these areas: Understanding the "Why" Behind Behavior: Children's actions often communicate deeper needs. By identifying the root causes, we can create supportive spaces for both the child and the teacher. Collaboration is Key: Managing challenging behaviors, especially post-pandemic, requires a united front. We discussed strategies to build strong partnerships with administration, parents, and colleagues. Teacher Well-being: The Foundation for Success. Self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for these incredible educators who nurture our future generation. Their dedication shouldn't come at the expense of their own well-being. Bridging the gap and addressing their specific needs is crucial, but how can we do this without overloading teachers and ensuring they are supported too? Some schools advocate for longer school days, but quality education should take precedence over quantity. In this post, I shed light on the importance of supporting neurodiverse children in schools. These students have unique strengths and challenges, requiring specialised attention and resources to thrive. Many schools struggle to support neurodiverse learners, leading to academic difficulties and social isolation. Educators often lack the necessary training and understanding to effectively accommodate these students' needs. To address this gap, schools must prioritise inclusivity and offer tailored support for neurodiverse children. This includes comprehensive educator training, implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL), providing individualised support, fostering acceptance, and offering social-emotional support. By advocating for neurodiversity awareness and inclusive education practices, we can create learning environments where all students have the opportunity to succeed. A letter to our school board and admin ……wanted to share this article published in Edutopia that is well written and provides helpful information on this topic of kids behaviors in the school environment. This is an issue that has had an impact on many educators, families, and our communities in one way or another. As Dr. Lori Desautels, professor of Applied Educational Neuroscience and classroom teacher reminds us that the work starts with the adults in the room. This is not about changing the students. The change starts with us. This is the modeling students need. More of the same isn’t working as our kids are showing us. They need the adults to show up differently based on where they are developmentally and as we know, children do not have linear growth and development. It’s often all over the place, and when we think of the stress of a global pandemic, the stress on caregivers, the added stress of illness, jobs, and even deaths, we need to respond to kids not with more control; but with more compassion. This is informed by the current neuroscience of brain development and the research on nervous system state dependent functioning. The adults are mirrors to the children. We need to model what we want to see in our kids. This all starts with the most basic of human needs- compassion and co regulation. There is no learning without this need being met. This is biology, not manipulation or defiance. Thank you for taking the time to read the article. We all have the same goals, to support all students starting with health, wellbeing, growth, and restoration that paves the path towards learning which is innate in all children. Couldn't love this inter-generational learning model (IL) idea more. The goal is to build intentional and impactful relationships between young children and older adults beyond the student-teacher relationship. These relationships are designed to be consistent and bring so many opportunities to support littles in their learning and play as well as to foster key SEL competencies. Teachers in classrooms where IL relationships occur indicate that "children who exhibit high levels of anxiety or hyperactivity tend to be more settled, as their interactions slow down and their energy becomes less intense to match the demeanor and energy of their senior partners." IL communities bring over-tasked educators much-needed support and allow strong one-on-one relationships to be developed. Not lost here is not only the amazing "gift" that seniors bring to little learners but equally important what they receive in return. Intergenerational opportunities are key to countering loneliness, maintaining cognitive and physical agility, and alleviating emotional and mental health concerns in seniors- improving their quality of life while prolonging it. "Repeated visits help create new neural pathways that combat the negative effects of isolation and even help to build greater resilience over time. One senior center director likened the effect of kids visiting to antidepressants after seeing how previously subdued seniors would instantly light up in the presence of children in a way they didn’t with their care providers." This school year, we started something new! All Prepared School Psychologist members have access to our mini-courses where members can earn CEUs or certificates of completion for learning about specific topics. All of our courses are two hours or less (hence the “mini” in mini-courses). “What Should I Worry About in Pre-K/TK?” was one of our more popular mini-courses released in September, and today, I want to recap some takeaways I believe you will find helpful and insightful. Let’s dive in! Complex play includes imaginative scenarios, problem-solving, and cooperative interactions with peers. When school psychologists observe children engaging in complex play, they learn valuable information about the child’s ability to explore abstract concepts, learn cause-and-effect relationships, and develop critical thinking skills. Jot down this information about the child and add it to your observation write-up. This can help parents and the IEP team understand the child's development as a whole. California, West Virginia, Alabama, and Oklahoma are at the forefront of a movement to establish free, universal pre-K programs for all four-year-olds by 2025-2026. This information is essential for school psychologists to understand because quality preschool programs lay the foundation for a child’s academic, social, and emotional development. By providing early access to quality education, pre-K programs can help identify and address potential learning or behavioral challenges early on, leading to more effective interventions and improved outcomes later in the child’s educational journey.
