Join me in London at #ResourcingTomorrow #MinesandMoney for the panel discussion: • How many new mines does Europe need to reach CRMA KPIs? • How on track is the EU on meeting the objectives of having 10% of strategic and critical minerals being mining locally by 2030 with the EU processing 40% of them and 25% of supply being attained? • What do mining companies think of the legislation in practice – including mining companies with operations inside the EU who are reliant on financing outside the EU and mining companies in jurisdictions such as Canada, Australia and Kazakhstan where there are MOUs? • Speeding up permitting procedures – are new guidelines being met? • How can investments be de-risked given the high failure fate of mining exploration? • China and the US have the advantage of being individual countries - how can the nations of the EU collaborate better? The #DRC boasts enormous #mineral wealth that has the potential to shape its destiny. Still, while we recognise that the country stands to gain from leveraging its vast reserves of #critical minerals, we maintain that efforts to diversify the economy predominate to safeguard its long-term #sustainability. Despite the significant economic contribution of the Congolese mining industry, it is marred by human rights abuses and #environmental violations. Aside from large-scale mining operations, the country harbours a substantial #artisanal mining sector. Our focus thus turns to uncovering the dark side of the DRC's mining industry, particularly within the artisanal segment. Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/4btHrfj

With prospects improving for the local mining industry, industry leaders conveyed a sense of optimism at this year's #JoburgIndaba. Now in its 12th year, the event provided a bullish outlook on the future of South African mining, with industry leaders sharing positive feedback on the formation of the Government of National Unity, which recently passed its 100-day mark. Notably, speakers at the event were encouraged by the growing relationships between government and the private sector, as well as engagements between entities such as Business for South Africa, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of South Africa, and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which will be a key driver for growth in the local context. The Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 is a collaborative investor-led initiative seeking to define a vision for a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector overall by 2030, and to develop a consensus about the role of finance in realising this vision. In October 2024, we launched a comprehensive landscape report that identified six foundational priorities - including driving best practice #standards industry-wide, fairer benefits for #communities, engaging on #conflict, positive legacies, including from #mine closure, and provision of capital. At the report launch, we committed to working closely with all stakeholders on the development of practical implementation plans before publishing our final recommendations for investors in 2025. The first step in that process is a series of workshops that we will be convening at the Investing in African Mining Indaba Conference to be held in Cape Town between 3rd and 7th February 2025. We will also be speaking at the Alternative Mining Indaba, which is a forum for stakeholders and civil societies to share their views and concerns about the #mining industry. If you are unable to attend, we will make meeting slides and other materials available through the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 website.
