In a world where democratic principles seem increasingly fragile, this webinar examines the critical state of democracy in Africa. Featuring Patrick Kulati, CEO of Good Governance Africa's Southern Africa Region, this conversation will explore the report's findings on how political systems impact the lives of ordinary Africans. With a year of political upheaval behind us, the discussion will address crucial questions: How are young democracies adapting? How have popular attitudes towards freedom shifted? And what role can civil society play in safeguarding democratic values? Don't miss this timely and insightful discussion taking place tomorrow at 1 pm EST (8 pm SAST): https://lnkd.in/eCVciM3b

Corruption remains one of the biggest threats to governance, development, and trust in democratic institutions across Africa. As highlighted in Africa Center's State of Democracy in Africa 2024 report, corruption infiltrates all levels of governance, weakening democratic systems, enabling authoritarian tendencies, and exacerbating economic inequality. This pervasive issue limits sustainable development, erodes citizens' faith in their governments and fuels widespread disillusionment as people demand greater accountability and transparency from their leaders. The report emphasises several solutions to combat corruption, including strengthening the independence of institutions such as the judiciary and electoral bodies, implementing and enforcing anti-corruption laws, fostering public education and advocacy to empower citizens, and promoting regional and international cooperation through frameworks like the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance. Another transformative solution gaining momentum is the establishment of the International Anti-Corruption Court (IACCourt). This court will address high-level corruption that often escapes national jurisdictions by holding leaders and officials accountable on a global scale. By complementing domestic efforts, the IACCourt offers a pathway to recover stolen assets, restore public trust, and create a powerful deterrent against future corruption. Corruption is not just a challenge; it is a call to action. Tackling it on a global scale is essential for unlocking Africa’s democratic potential and achieving sustainable development. With bold initiatives like the IACCourt, we can promote accountability, transparency, and justice, ensuring governance works for the people, not against them. Join us on Wednesday, Jan. 29th at 1pm ET for a virtual panel discussion that explores the governing landscape across Africa in 2025. Building on the release of our State of Democracy in Africa report at the end of last year, this moderated conversation will expand on the report's projections to assess how the continent’s current experience fits within broader global political trends. How do we consider the viability of African democracies in the context of an international arena where those that have historically enforced and upheld its fundamental principles appear less committed to doing so? And how, if at all, have developments on the continent over the past year informed popular attitudes about democratic institutions coming into 2025? Register here: https://lnkd.in/eCVciM3b
