Having the right language to talk about a #fundraising priority is important. But it’s just as important that all donor-facing folks use that language and stay aligned when speaking with donors. Otherwise, you’re likely to cause donor confusion or set expectations that are difficult to keep. Case in point: I was once a part of a comprehensive campaign that involved many capital naming opportunities. The ED was a dynamo, but also tended to make things up as they went along. When making the case for a specific naming opportunity to a high-priority donor, that ED made up terms to describe the space that the donor clung to and demanded be a part of the naming agreement. What did this lead to? 🔷An extensive back-and-forth with the legal team about using the terminology the donor demanded 🔷Securing a smaller gift than appropriate for a space with that name So, please, make sure that your internal voices speak in harmony about giving opportunities. — 👉 Your turn: Have a similar story?
