When we experience fatigue, overwhelm, bone-deep exhaustion, burnout or any other challenge, our natural tendency is so often to think that there is something wrong with us. This might even fuel feelings of shame towards the part of ourselves who has ran out of capacity, and just can't keep going anymore... I start all of my workshops and talks by inviting a reflection on all the layers of context within which we each live, and how they influence the way in which our nervous system meets our everyday circumstances. Many layers are unique to each one of us (our race, religion, sexual orientation, ancestry, family of origin, childhood,...) - and some layers are shared: being a human in today's society and having gone through a global pandemic are some common shared layers. Neither of which are 'kind' to our nervous system. Experiencing burnout, exhaustion, fatigue in a world that is fast-paced, always on, overstimulating, and uncertain is not an indicator that there is anything wrong with any us. It simply indicates that our human nervous system is doing the best it can to protect us from what it perceives to be threatening in a world that constantly triggers our stress response. So please, don't "feel guilty for needing a break from a world that was never set up to protect your mental health in the first place". Taking pauses and prioritising deep rest is VITAL for us to thrive in our everyday life, to create a life that is meaningful to us (even if it doesn't follow the traditional blueprint for success), and to role model the kind of lives and society we would love our children to grow up in. #rest #burnout #exhaustion #wellbeing #stress #emotionalwellbeing #resilience #life
