"Animal shelters can be very stressful for dogs in ways that can put their well-being and adoptability at risk. Foster programs lower euthanasia rates for shelters and rescues particularly those that make more use of volunteers (as opposed to staff) for fostering... Even short stays in a foster homes appear to allow dogs to get more rest with concomitantly lower cortisol levels, thus improving the wellbeing of shelter dogs."
