In a world that rapidly gets caught up in extremes - the "either/or" mentality is hammered at us daily - moment by moment, actually. And here's why that matters: Many people believe that it's somehow self-centered to focus on self-care (so usually the mindset is, "Either you focus on others or you focus on yourself"). But reality lies in "both/and," not "either/or." So you can absolutely focus both on yourself and on others.
To take care of yourself is essential for how you approach the world. Think of a goofy example: If you don't take the time to get dressed and you walk out of your house without clothes, your presence will likely distract whatever help you attempt to offer others. Taking the time to get dressed is not "selfish," in fact, quite the opposite: It's necessary if you're not trying to have everyone focus on you.
Now let's jump to a more serious example: Corrections officers have a vastly more difficult job than what anyone outside of the world of corrections understands. It is beyond a Herculean task to ask them to go through what they daily experience without offering the access, training, means and support to take care of themselves. It is both possible and necessary for COs to take genuine care of their body, mind and spirit. Yes, it takes ingenuity, adaptability and pragmatism to fit that into the crushing schedules with limited staff; but it is possible, and at Keystone Restituere Justice Center, we believe it is also absolutely necessary.
Whatever field you're in, today, take a moment to reflect on the "both/and" reality in your own life; and know with all of you that it's not wrong or bad or selfish to take care of your body, mind and spirit. You are worth all of your effort, and the better off you are in all three phases, the bigger the impact you will make.
Sending everyone who sees this, and everyone who doesn't, much peace.
