As we celebrate Juneteenth, we’ve gathered together stories of Black American resilience and achievement, from the unsung heroism of Black nurses who helped cure tuberculosis in the late 1920s to the story of Madam C.J. Walker, whose life as a legendary African American entrepreneur and philanthropist formed the basis of the Netflix series starring Octavia Spencer. Which books are you adding to your WTR shelves?

Today, as the 47th president takes the oath of office, let us not dwell on divisions. Let’s honor the legacy of Dr. King—a man who stood, marched, and sacrificed for justice and equality. This is a day for unity, celebration, and reflection. If you’re wondering how to celebrate, here are a few ways to make the most of this meaningful day: 1. Celebrate Us Take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come as a community. Celebrate the victories, big and small. Celebrate the beauty of Black excellence. 2. Watch a Documentary or Video Tribute Learn more about Dr. King and other Black trailblazers who made this country better. Their courage and vision will remind you of the power of perseverance. 3. Dance It Out Let loose and put on your favorite R&B, gospel, blues, or jazz song. Music is one of the purest forms of celebration—let it fill your heart with gratitude and pride. 4. Read That Book Pull out the book by your favorite Black author that you’ve been meaning to finish. Dive into the brilliance of their words and feel the connection to our shared stories. 5. Prep for Black and Bougie Game Night! Dive into the rich history of Black leaders, culture, and music. Bring your knowledge and joy to the event, ready to connect and celebrate with like-minded people. Most importantly, celebrate Dr. King. Celebrate us. And plan to join us tomorrow night for the Virtual Black and Bougie game night for more celebration.

"White Hand" This artwork powerfully reflects the gatekeeping often faced by Black men striving for leadership and influence. As Black educators, how many of our opportunities have hinged on being deemed "safe" or acceptable by others in power? In this painting, a Black man faces adversity, standing before a white gatekeeper who holds the key to limitless possibilities. The gatekeeper imposes rules and conditions, ensuring the man never forgets who granted him access. This piece challenges us to reflect: In our profession and communities, how can we become the ones who create doors and opportunities for ourselves and others? How do we disrupt systems of gatekeeping for the next generation of Black male educators? Let’s discuss.

Thoughts from Ryan Knight on Black Enterprise Blog: Justice Department Finds 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre ‘Coordinated, Systematic Attack’🔹The DOJ investigation into the Tulsa massacre emphasizes the heinous nature of the attack and its impact on Greenwood's Black community. 🔹Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke described the violence as unprecedented in American history, highlighting the racist hostility and annihilation suffered by Black individuals. 🔹This profound historical event sheds light on the ongoing struggle for justice and equality faced by Black business owners and entrepreneurs. 🔹The resilience and strength of the Black community in the aftermath of such atrocities serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and advocacy. 🔹As we reflect on this dark chapter in history, let us continue to support and uplift Black businesses and entrepreneurs, striving for a more inclusive and equitable future. I'm very proud to share this article I wrote about Fredericksburg's beloved "Mayor for Life," Reverend Lawrence Davies, who passed in early August. While he will be missed as a leader, a pastor, and a friend, he is part of a long history of Black political activism in the Fredericksburg area, which I've attempted to capture here: https://lnkd.in/ejXpy77i
