45 years. Or so. That’s how long it will take an average reader (11 books annually) to read the 500 books on this ranking. Shane Sherman’s The Greatest Books of All Time (https://lnkd.in/ePpkeiGM) gathered more than 300 best-books lists to create a compiled index. The ranking is based on the assumption that the more a book appears on lists, the more acclaim it has. It defines greatness by cultural consensus. Each list has a weight on the general score a book receives based on variables like how many books are on the list, global vs. regional rankings, and the timeframe it covers (lists that cover more years, 100+, receive more weight than those that only cover decades). The Economist used Harry Tong’s estimate on how long it takes to read a book — Tong uses the length for an audiobook as a proxy for how long it will take to read silently — and created a list where you can filter by century/decade and original language. You can create your own list and estimate how long it will take you. The best book on this ranking is the only one in the top 50 by both an author from the Global South and also set in the Global South: It is 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.
