“It is especially unfortunate that during one of the most disruptive periods in the history of public education in Texas, this lawsuit will withhold valuable and transparent information about public school quality that would help parents, educators, and lawmakers make better, more informed decision about the quality of education available to every child in every community of our state,” Good Reason Houston CEO Cary Wright said. Join us in downtown Austin or online on Tuesday, April 16, for “How new laws are affecting public education.” Much of the debate around education in the Texas Legislature last year centered on legislation that would allow families to use public dollars to send their children to private schools. But state lawmakers also debated other public education issues, and key legislation was passed to address some of the gaps in academic achievement in the wake of disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. At the event, we’ll take a look at what has helped Texas children catch up with their studies and the lingering challenges they face. We’ll also discuss the impact of new laws — like investments in high-quality instructional materials, targeted tutoring for struggling students and accelerating advancement in math — and what else the state can do to help Texas students. It's time for legislators to stop expecting educators to forego a living wage "for the kids" while they refuse to allocate funds that will drastically improve the lives of Texas public school students. The most statistically significant factor in student success is a competent, caring teacher in the classroom. So how exactly is underfunding districts who should be allocating 80-85 percent to staff pay helping children? How is keeping teachers from enjoying the same benefits the majority of public servants enjoy attracting and retaining competent and caring educators? We have lots of work to do.
It's time for an evolution in education. With $21.2 billion in extra state revenue, the 89th legislative session is set to change the lives of 5.5 million Texas public students. Read the full story at: go.ryht.org/TXSchoolQA #SchoolFunding #TxLege #TxEd #89TxSession

70 years ago, Brown v Board of Education ended the legal segregation of schools. Despite overwhelming evidence that diverse, integrated schools are better for all students, far too many children in 2024 attend classrooms apart from their peers of different economic and racial backgrounds. Our new survey with Morning Consult shows Americans are concerned about persistent school segregation, and want our leaders to step up and do more to diversify schools. In Detroit, the bankrupt school district used to sit on blighted and abandoned buildings to prevent other public or private schools from buying and redeveloping them. A state law was passed to prevent the uses of these types of property deed restrictions, leading to better schools opening and expanding and increasing educational opportunities for children. But the state legislature is now considering a bill that would repeal that law. If passed into law, more run-down buildings would litter our state. And more Michigan school kids would be kept from pursuing better educational options. Learn more about Detroit Prep overcoming these obstacles to serve kids: https://lnkd.in/gB_jy8Dx
