An only in New York City moment? Perhaps not. Late the other night, I witnessed something rather remarkable on 5th Avenue in the heart of New York City that reminded me of the lessons from Clint Eastwood’s “Heartbreak Ridge." Imagine this: someone riding a bike with no front wheel, navigating the bustling streets of Manhattan for many blocks to get home. And doing it all just one handed. In his iconic role as Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway, Clint Eastwood plays a regimented drill sergeant imbuing his recruits with the importance of learning to improvise in order to deal with any situation in which they are likely to find themselves. Life, like combat and late-night bike rides in the city, is full of unpredictability. Inevitably, you must improvise, adapt, and make the best of your circumstances. It’s a reminder that the spirit of hard work, determination, and the ability to adapt is at the core of our successes. Just like Gunnery Sergeant Highway and the determined cyclist, working tirelessly and improvising when necessary are qualities that lead to triumph in both our personal and professional lives. So, here's to those who dare to take unconventional routes and find creative solutions. I watched the 2024 documentary “Blue Angels” and I loved it! It follows the team during its 2022 season from practices to the final performance. I loved it not just because I grew up watching the Blue Angels and it is one of the reasons I joined the Navy. This is a movie that describes what any organization - sports, medicine, manufacturing, service - must do if it wants to go beyond great and become the absolute very best at what they do.
