Many of us have likely donated to Goodwill and wandered through a Goodwill store to discover some great fines. But do you know where the proceeds of those donated items are going? We're learning more about just that today. Goodwill Keystone area is sponsoring the segment. Jennifer Diaz along with Mark Mcgaffin join me. Tell our viewers more about Goodwill and the overall mission. Because yes, we think stores, right? Yeah, a lot of people think about our stores and Goodwill is one of the most recognizable brands in in the world. And a lot of folks think, you know, are aware that you can donate items and you can shop for items that are retail stores. But a lot of folks are unaware where the proceeds of the donated items are going. And they are actually going to help support our mission, which is to help people with disabilities and other barriers to employment, build skills, find jobs and grow their careers. This is what we call our story behind the store. Love that the story behind the store. So to accomplish that mission, you have different programs. Can you talk about some of those programs? Yeah. So our whole goal is to eliminate any barrier that would prevent you from earning a paycheck. So that barrier could be a physical disability, it could be mental health, it could be addiction, it could be reentering the community from the justice system. And so we provide career coaching, job skills training, soft skills, Youth Services. One of my favorite programs is called our mobile Work Crew, and it's for individuals that might not be successful independently in the community. But when they're in a group environment supported by a coach, they're very successful in earning that paycheck. Ohh, that's lovely. You mentioned that mobile aspect and there's also this mobile training lab. Who are you training? What is this? Yes, this is our new venture. We just launched it in the spring, Really excited about this. This came out of COVID. So we really realized that there was a lack of access to technology and so goodwill kind of what can we do to be part of that solution. And we have created this 24 foot long mobile learning lab unit that can travel directly into communities. It has five computer workstations. We have a mobile learning lab trainer that goes along and again, you can jump on the lab and build your resume. You can practice that. Interview skills. We have virtual reality goggles where you can explore different career pathways and again bringing training into communities. A great idea, Virtual reality to explore different career path options. That is such a great idea. We're going to circle back to the store part of everything, right? For these programs to continue, you need donated items. You need shoppers. How can someone help in that capacity? Yeah, absolutely. Donations are the lifeblood of everything we do. So we have several donation centers throughout your viewership area and we encourage folks to visit yourgoodwill.org where they can find locations as well as our hours of operation. Can you explain to folks who maybe have not donated before, like how easy it is? Like, do you come during certain times? Do you drop it off right out of your car? Like, how does it work? Yeah, it is. It is very easy. And again, we have the hours of operation on our website. We're so folks can go out there and find out when we are open. But they can just pull up their car and we have donation attendants there that can help them unload their car and and drop it off right there in our bins. So it's it's very easy process, very good. Where can viewers learn more not about the store, but about goodwill and the programs that you do in your mission? Yeah, absolutely. Again, as I mentioned, yourgoodwill.org has a lot of great information out there along with not just where our donations centers are located, but also you know how folks can donate items that what we can and cannot accept. Very good, Very good. Yes, because you don't want to be a dumping spot, that's for sure. I know that you need those good quality lives. Thank you so much. Great to talk with you today. 🌟 Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month! 🌟 Meet Scotty, an inspiring member of our Federal Courthouse custodial team! 🏛️🧹 Scotty's journey with Goodwill began in our vocational training program while he was still in school. Despite facing multiple learning disabilities, Scotty's grit and determination led him to overcome challenges and secure a position at the Federal Courthouse in Harrisburg, PA. 💪 Grit is gold, and Scotty proves it every day! His politeness, dedication, and outstanding work ethic have earned praise from supervisors, security officers, and even US Magistrate Judge Carlson. As Judge Carlson notes, "Scotty's hard work ensures that the public we serve are welcomed to a clean courthouse facility." Today, Scotty continues to excel, cleaning both the Federal Courthouse and the Air Force Reserve Center. He's become a go-to mentor for new team members and the first to learn new equipment.
