The hilarious meme aside, loss of identity and purpose is a very real thing and, yes, it can feel like a freight train hitting when least expected. #veteranshelpingveterans I would argue it feels more like an infected wound that refuses to heal. The process can be extremely slow, annoyingly painful, and can have serious consequences if left unchecked. What worked for me was seeing and experiencing how other countries deal with it. As an example, in Israel (gross oversimplification ahead), for better or for worse, post-military service mentalities are nowhere similar to ours. I’ve tried multiple times to speak with Israelis about their military service and I can best describe it as asking an American about working at Stop and Shop; it’s just an experience. Obviously, the ‘mandated’ element of Israel’s military service plays a huge role in the backdrop behind U.S. voluntary military service, but I suspect it’s more than just that. Individual results may differ! But seeing military service treated as taking out the garbage (with no special or endearing treatment, no stickers, unit patches, bumper stickers, rank, or license plates), was strange at first — almost uncaring or depressing — but it actually helped me understand that although it is not ‘nothing’, it is merely a ‘chapter’ in a long life. In other words, I view the veteran identity as a dial more so than an on/off switch, and I avoid those who treat it as a switch like the plague. We have 'speaking AS A VETERAN' memes for a reason; there's a kernel of truth to our identity politics—unique to the United States (I follow all the ‘as a veteran’ folks in D.C., and, for me, having broken away from that mentality and the silly internal squabbles, I’ve freed up a lot of the ‘lack of identity’ issues I faced years ago because it was merely a chapter, not the entire book of my life. I’m also not the only one who has figured this out; I have a long list of professionals I follow who express similar opinions. This was one of the most honorable classes I conducted in a while, interacting with over 60 defense personnel from Indian Army, Airforce and Navy. These are men and women who have served our forces for 10 to 25 years and are now rearing for a second inning in the world of corporate. My session was on #DesignYourCareer, an apt topic for the business at hand. Here're the key insights: 1) Know your prime mover (fear, greed, duty or love) 2) Discover your flow channel (where you lose the sense of time) 3) Invest in high-leverage activities (assets offering compounding returns) 4) Sweat your assets (by building content and honing connects), and 5) Pursue financial independence, for it keeps you intellectually honest. Navigating the agony of irrelevance is a journey reserved only for the successful! I was reading a book recently which captured, perfectly, how I felt when I left the military. Long story short, in the last chapter of my military career, I held a position that enable me to re-design the way Army Commandos were trained. My team and I were considered exceptionally successful. We increased the number of soldiers who passed the All-Arms Commando course whilst concurrently ensuring the standard and ethos of Army commandos wasn’t diluted. Despite successes, and awards, even before I left the military, my position, my office, someone else was already in my seat, answering my calls and emails, leading my team and training my soldiers… Time and time again, I hear other men, sometimes clients, talk about the agony of almost overnight irrelevance. The book, Strength to Strength, by A.C Brooks shares: Almost nothing feels worse than becoming irrelevant, or even useless, to others who once held us in high regard. And yet, for men who give their all to their career or business, as soon as they leave, sell, or exit, they’re pretty much irrelevant to those they leave behind. Know this. No one cares as much as you do about your job, your career or your business. When the time comes to move on, be ready for the pain for transition, the question marks around identity and inevitable agony of irrelevance.
