I work with people who want to make the leap from corporate to nonprofit, by coaching them to find the right path for their servant heart. I love helping great people find great nonprofits.
75%. 75% of an annual salary. That is the cost of employee turnover. I recently attended a meeting where an HR guru shared this statistic, and it got me thinking about the high turnover rate of nonprofit fundraising professionals. On average, every 16 to 24 months (depending on which survey you read), a nonprofit will hire another fundraising professional due to turnover. If the 75% statistic is true, this high turnover rate is costing hard-won donor money over and over and over. We can do better, nonprofit community! Stay tuned to learn more about how we can address this issue. #nonprofit #fundraising #employeeturnover

I help nonprofits create stronger relationships with donors that grow fundraising and impact, and work with them in recruiting new team members. Weekly "Dan's Tips" for nonprofit fundraisers on the website.
I have a new article on Medium out about recruiting for your next nonprofit fundraising team member. This part is one of my biggest suggestions based on several seaches in the past six months: "First, unless you have done this recently, re-write your job description. In too many cases the same job description from ten years ago is still being used. Bring it into the 21st century. Make sure everything you want in this position is clear in the job description. And of course, include the salary." #recruiting #nonprofits #fundraising

I just saw a local #fundraising position that requires the candidate to do all primary fundraising, accounting and human resources tasks. With a requirement of 45 - 60 hours per week! 🤯 As my friend Michelle Flores Vryn, CFRE put it last week - rolling 2 or 3 positions into one is a FAST TRACK to burn out!! 💥 It begs the question - why are #nonprofits so prone to stretching their resources beyond their means? Call me crazy, but I believe we have to be realistic about what is achievable with the budgets and resources allotted to us. Here's what's not realistic: ⏰ Expecting staff to put work over their personal lives 🤦♀️ Putting the workload of an entire team on ONE person 💰 Only correlating a fundraiser's value to their dollars raised When nonprofits are driving their mission on the backs of burnt out staff members, I'd argue we're doing more harm than good. Thoughts?

How do you participate in your local community? I was 38 years old before I voluntarily participated in any organization outside of work, or Church. Then because of circumstances, I played the role of Mr. Mom. It started with being on the Site Council for my kid's school. Since then, I have been on the PTA, and been PTA President. Currently serving on the Board for the local Hospital Foundation, a city Board, and on the Board of our county travel DMO. I mention this because by serving in a variety of capacities, I've learned to see the world from a viewpoint different than my own. It has given me the opportunity to learn more about non-profit organizations, and a chance to meet regularly with some intelligent individuals. Where do you volunteer, and what have you learned? #volunteerwork #businessrelationships #realestate #investing
