Today is my 10-year anniversary at Mace!
When I joined the Mace Sustainability team as a Sustainability Manager in 2014, we were a team of just 15 people. Back then, sustainability was far lower on the agenda and there was definitely less conversation on topics like decarbonisation and social value.
So here we are in 2024, and a lot has changed…
· Mace is a carbon neutral company, led by an ambitious group board, and we have become an award-winning, purpose-led business with a corporate priority to pursue a sustainable world.
· We are working towards saving 10 million tCO2 for our clients, creating £1.3bn of social value per year, and delivering 500ha of biodiverse space by 2026.
· The Responsible Business team is now global, made up of 200 sustainability and social value practitioners across the world, delivering an impact across the Mace consultancy and construction businesses.
· Responsible Business is the most visited page on the company website, with a range of thought leadership and industry insights created and shared on our channels.
I didn’t get to this point alone. I’ve been fortunate to have amazing managers and bosses along the way with Fiona McWilliams, Nick James, Isabel McAllister and Mark Holmes, worked with some fantastic people, and made great friends, many of whom, like Edward Vaughan Dixon, Omar Rouchdy, Rachael Wheeler, Conor Storkey and Ian Allard have also gone on to become sustainability leaders.
When it comes to leadership, I’m inspired by the approach of NFL coaches Bill Walsh and Bill Parcells. They've won 5 Super Bowls between them, however, it's their commitment to develop others that resulted in 30 of the subsequent 37 Super Bowl winners being coached by one of their protégés.
I’d love to spend the next 10 years not only acting to deliver the sustainability commitments we’ve made today, continuing to move the Responsible Business agenda forward, but also creating the opportunities for others to become the responsible business leaders of tomorrow.
