Great project Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC)! Shoutout to my colleague Steven Bishop, GIT for managing Geo-Hydro Engineers, Inc.'s project involvement for materials testing, special inspections, and NPDES inspections for The University of Georgia's expanded softball facility. If you don't know, a critical part of any project is inspecting and testing the soil, foundations, concrete, rebar, structural steel, masonry, etc. for compliance to the project design and specifications. We also provided the project's #geotechnical report, so Kaylin James P.G. and the rest of our geotech department deserve a shoutout too. The critical pieces of information in a geotechnical report can usually be summarized in a few paragraphs or pages, but this information is incredibly important for structural design! Identifying challenging soil/rock/groundwater conditions early means opportunities to refine the project design to reduce delays and manage costs during construction.

The Golden Gate Bridge, opened in 1937, is one of the most iconic suspension bridges in the world and a symbol of San Francisco. With a total length of 2,737 meters and a main span of 1,280 meters, it was the longest bridge of its type in the world for nearly 30 years. Its distinctive color, "International Orange," not only stands out in the foggy San Francisco Bay but also improves visibility in adverse weather conditions. Designed by engineer Joseph Strauss, the bridge combines innovation and beauty, making it a lasting symbol of civil engineering. The towering supports of the Golden Gate Bridge, rising 227 meters above the water, are an engineering marvel. These towers support the bridge’s main span and are crucial to its suspension structure. The bridge serves as an important vehicular and pedestrian crossing and is also a world-renowned tourist attraction. PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Wentworth Douglas Hospital | Portsmouth, NH If one could choose a word to describe the primary advantage of #thinbrick #precast #solutions in commercial design, it would be #efficiency. Virtually every new construction project is up against time and weather hurdles, which is exactly where thin brick becomes most efficient. For the Wentworth Douglas Hospital, an accelerated schedule combined with winter in New England meant a product would need to be utilized to overcome these practical challenges. This is precisely how thin brick in precast construction is so effective as architects are able to achieve the look of a beautiful mix materials façade, while providing smart solutions for project engineers and managers. The Cantilevered Portion of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway is truly a marvel of engineering! This unique structure, which stretches over the East River in New York City, showcases the innovative design and construction techniques used to create a roadway that appears to float in mid-air. The cantilevered portion of the BQE is a prime example of how engineers can overcome challenging terrain and space constraints to build essential infrastructure. By extending a section of the roadway out from a solid support structure, engineers were able to create a suspended platform that allows for efficient traffic flow while minimizing the impact on surrounding areas. The cantilevered design of the BQE not only provides a practical solution for navigating through densely populated urban areas but also serves as a striking visual feature of the city skyline. The sight of cars and trucks traversing the elevated roadway with the river below creates a sense of awe and wonder for both residents and visitors alike. In addition to its functional and aesthetic appeal, the cantilevered portion of the BQE serves as a testament to the skill and creativity of the engineers and architects who worked on its construction. The precision required to balance the weight of the roadway and vehicles while maintaining structural integrity is truly impressive. During our recent RAC Town Halls, we unveiled some key findings from a recent survey of nearly 400 architects, engineers and contractors. As the need for more resilient structures becomes more and more apparent, concrete masonry ranks high for its structural capability and all-around safety. This group’s desire to understand other inherent benefits of CMU like aesthetics and design flexibility, energy efficiency and low embodied carbon has emerged as a golden opportunity for concrete masonry!

The Charlotte Hornets unveiled plans and renderings for its Spectrum Center renovations. The project, called Re!magine Spectrum Center, includes a variety of arena upgrades, such as more seating, concourse improvements, transformed club and hospitality experiences and more. Renovations will begin May 2024 and should be completed by 2025. To allow for project completion, the arena will be closed from May-September in both 2024 and 2025. UK building regulations conundrum: Cavity barriers are required at slabs and around openings, yet there's a lack of limits on the dimensions of spandrel area between the openings. This situation allows architects to opt for wall-to-wall windows, which minimises the room available for any barrier, especially when the space needed for cladding brackets is taken into account. Much time is consumed in preparing engineering statements that often don't lead to clear approvals, leaving the compliance of such designs in the grey area.
