#OpenForWork Today marks the successful completion of my 12-week Software Engineering Internship at TikTok in San Jose, CA. It's been a journey filled with learning, hard work, and memorable moments. My main project was building a new search pipeline to a distributed database with Elasticsearch, optimizing searches across 100M+ records from an extensive MySQL database. I engineered both full and incremental data migrations with RabbitMQ and HTTP-triggered Lambda. Optimized data handling by reducing the number of requests by 90% in production.
I also owned and engineered recommendation APIs for thousands of creators globally, utilizing Elasticsearch, Hive, and cron jobs. I drove consensus for a plan of action in a cross-functional team and performed end-to-end testing.
 The experience at TikTok allowed me to sharpen my problem-solving skills, deepen my computer science knowledge, and collaborate effectively with experienced engineers, refining my communication skills along the way. Grateful to my manager Simon(Wenxiang) Shi, mentor Qifan Jin, and the entire team for their continuous support. As I graduate in three months from my last semester at Cornell University, I look forward to the new opportunities that lie ahead. The average tenure of an intern at growth.sg is almost 12 months. No, we're not underpaying/exploiting anyone. No, we're not on year-long uni programs. And no, we don't do fluffy "corporate culture" stuff like pong tables and fancy yacht trips (are they even still a thing?). Instead, here's what we do: Airdrop our folks into the wild battlefields, with uncomfortable positions and sometimes malfunctioning equipment. Offer highly painstaking, detailed, crunching, and grinding work (without tryouts - no "let's try this and see how") that nauseates the average folk on the street. Pack calendars and to-do lists to the brim (and it never ends!) while sparing absolutely no slack (no such thing as "oh they're tired so let's let this typo slide"). Wait, there's more! We also... Put our people at the forefront of the business, fully exposing them to our unique venture studio x digital consultancy business model, with full access to highly-present stakeholders who are all fully bought-in. Empower interns and 'adults' alike to take full responsibility + action bias of projects (ask for forgiveness, not approval) Project owners becoming so adept and spending up to 3x less effort while earning the same fee, and that means more income opportunities with us. The result? Internships extended semester after semester; freelancers choosing to work with us over larger agencies/clients. Alumni going on to work at Grab, Shopee, and Publicis Groupe. A team that keeps delivering, enabling us to drive more value to clients even on same retainer sizes. And this is why people stay on. So, if you have: an extraordinary drive to not be ordinary, love painful & dirty work, in exchange for being "a year or two ahead of your peers" (real verbatim), shoot a message. I don't bite. My Life After Bangkit After completing my education at Bangkit Academy led by Google, Tokopedia, Gojek, & Traveloka as part of the Machine Learning cohort, I have pursued several opportunities to put my new knowledge to use. and I am excited to share these opportunities in my #lifeafterbangkit 💻Internship at Digital Forte Indonesia After graduating from Bangkit, I interned at Digital Forte Indonesia as a backend developer. During this internship, I developed a web-based attendance application. This project allowed me to apply the best practices I learned at Bangkit in a real-world setting. The experience helped me improve my problem-solving skills and adapt to new technologies quickly. 🎤Guest Speaker at S.Kom Having successfully completed the Bangkit program and with my team achieving a Top 80 capstone project, we were invited as guest speakers at my university webinar. There, we shared insights, wisdom, and experiences about the Bangkit program to encourage and inform other students. It was a rewarding experience to inspire others and answer their questions about the challenges and rewards of the program. 🎙️Guest Speaker at Bangkit Study Group In addition to being a guest speaker at the university, my team and I were also invited as a speaker in Bangkit 2023 Batch 2 study group. In this session, we provided tips and strategies for getting a capstone project into the Top 80 and shared our experiences working together as a team. We emphasized the importance of collaboration, effective communication, and time management in detail highlighting the strategies that led to our success and provided advice on teamwork and project management. 🍍Research at Great Giant Foods Following my internship, I conducted research at PT. Great Giant Foods (GGF) in Lampung Tengah for my thesis. My project involved creating a model to predict the weather in the vicinity of PT. GGF. I was confident in tackling this topic because I had previously worked on a similar project during Bangkit, which gave me the necessary knowledge and experience to complete my thesis successfully. This research project allowed me to enhanced my understanding of real-world applications of machine learning. 📃Completing My Final Thesis Defense I successfully finsihed my thesis defense on May 20, 2024. I felt a tremendous sense of pride reflecting on the journey I have undertaken. Each step I took prepared me for this achievement. This milestone marked the end of an important chapter in my academic journey and the beginning of my professional career. My experiences after graduating from Bangkit have broadened my understanding of machine learning and better prepared me for the professional world. These opportunities have not only enhanced my technical skills but also boosted my confidence and expanded my professional network. 🚀 Reflecting on My Internship Experience at Allin Pro Enterprise 🚀 As I compose this post to summarize my learnings from the 2-month offline internship at Allin Pro Industries Private Limited, I am pleased to share several key takeaways from this enriching experience. Though this role was outside my core field of data science, the experience was invaluable and broadened my perspective in ways I hadn't anticipated. 🔍 Key Learnings: 1. Amazon Advertising: I delved into campaign management, from setting up ads to optimizing them through A/B testing and analyzing metrics like CTR and ROAS. 2. Product Listings & SEO: I gained insights into crafting compelling product titles, optimizing images, and managing variations. 3. Cataloguing: Mastered product categorization, inventory management, and compliance with Amazon’s guidelines. 4. Seller vs. Vendor Models: Explored the nuances between seller-centric and vendor-centric approaches on Amazon. 5. Product Codes & Exemptions: Understood the significance of HSN, UPC, EAN, and GTIN codes, and the process for obtaining exemptions. 6. Fulfillment Methods: Compared FBM and FBA models to understand their impact on scalability and customer service. 7. Account Health: Learned how to maintain metrics like ODR and valid tracking rates to ensure optimal performance. 🔧 Connecting the Dots: Even though my internship wasn’t directly related to data science, it provided a deep dive into the backend mechanics of e-commerce platforms like Amazon. These 10 weeks as a Software Engineering Intern have been a whirlwind of exciting projects, incredible mentors, and a supportive community of Googlers.
